I'm really surprised at all the bad ratings. I really like this place. I'm not too crazy about the prices but their pretty much the same as anywhere else in the area that I would go to because I'm not a fan of Subways.

I come to this place when Im headed to work and waiting for the Q39. The guys are always friendly and quick. A 6"sub cost about $6 and comes with a generous about of meat. They also make a good bacon egg and cheese and have a nice selection of drinks. Also a lotto machine if you're feeling lucky! I stand under the awning when its raining or I take a seat at the table and chair they have outside when Im tired. They have an ATM outside because its cash only, Its like a bodega/deli with table and chairs in the back.

I like it here and prefer it over pumpernickel next door.

My friend & I walked in after a taxing vintage shopping experience at the outlet across the bridge. We were looking to sit and eat and rest our barking dogs (feet). As I trudged up the stairs I heard my friend asked if they had seating. Young Guy behind the counter said no. She pointed and said "so what is that?". I walked in and peeped and saw some tables and chairs. I then clarified that we were looking for a place to sit down. He said "oh I thought you meant CDs!". We laughed it up and got straight to business.

My friend ordered a ham & cheese. I am indecisive af so he suggested the pastrami, corn beef & swiss cheese. At first I said no but he kept pointing me in the direction of that sandwich so I just got it. Best decision I made that day. I used their bathroom located in the rear near the tables. When I came out his mother (my assumption) asked me what I wanted on my sandwich. I'm not big on hot sandwiches so I don't know what to put on them. I just asked for red onions. The guy suggested the spicy mustard and I saw oil & vinegar when his mother reached for the spicy mustard so I asked for that too. That sandwich was amazing! I will definitely be back. I miss their sammichs already!

Also Young Guy behind the counter is extremely nice and patient. After he helped with my indecisive sammich struggle, he came around the counter to assist me with my hand sanitizer struggle. I could not get any out of the machine near the door to save my life. I felt so stupid! I do think I was overcharged for the Wise honey BBQ chips that were clearly marked as $.99. Didn't make a stink about it.

i gave this place a try and cant agree more about the rubbery sandwich and the over charging.  I was charged $6.50 cash only.  I took this togo and my sandwich should have been 5.50.  Sandwich wasnt anything special.  Subway is around the corner.

What the hell, Yelp?

I will admit that a four star rating is a bit generous for this place. Maybe I'm biased because I live nearby, or because the guy who works here may be nicer than Jesus. But what's with all the hate?

American Hero does not have a comprehensive deli. If you want fancy sandwiches, obscure bagel types, lunch entrees, etc. then you want Pumpernickel Bagel right next door.

But if you want a bodega-type sandwich with deli meat of any kind, then you can get it here. Or a solid cup of coffee. Or lottery tickets. Or one of those giant cases of Powerade that will serve as a beacon to future civilizations.

And seriously, the service here is unfathomably nice. The main guy that works at the Hero lights up when he sees regulars, and is always asking about everyone's life. Last weekend he threw a bunch of free candies in our bag and wished us a glorious day.

So if you want to avoid this place because of the bad reviews, which are upset about things like not selling meatballs (?), then you're missing a chance to stock up on nourishment for the trip to SPACE WOMB.

A rubbery, tepid and overspiced chicken cutlet, a sad stripe of orange cheese half-melted on (that they apparently added another dollar to the price for), two handfuls of hot jalapenos (when I asked for hot peppers I thought I'd give the yellow banana peppers?), a mouthful of chewy white bread--everything about the chicken sandwich there I got was gross. It was supposedly a hot sandwich but there was nothing hot about it. Shouldn't that mean they throw it in the oven for two minutes to get the bread crisp? Anyway I threw it out after one bite, what a waste of $6.50. It was full of people sitting at the tables, who either know something I don't about this place or know jack about sandwich.

I was in college doing an internship around the neighborhood. I loved this place, I used to grab a cold sandwich all the time. The prices are not bad either!

This is a great local deli shop! The workers are super friendly - and fast service.
I have a couple of favorites that you should definately try including the grilled chicken wrap and the  America's Best sub (basically an Italian hero)

Definitely more of a deli place than hot foods - so if you like fresh meat (all boars head) and want a choice of fresh bread (ranging from bagels, rolls, different subs (honey oat, wheat, plain,etc) but They do have french fries and burgers too. Sometimes substituting the bread costs more tho..

Tastiest ham and cheese sandwich ever. Too bad it didn't agree with my stomach. It was like eating a laxative. Never again.

BEWARE BECAUSE THEY WILL OVER CHARGE YOU!!!!!!!!!

I ordered a ham, turkey and swiss half sub with hot peppers.  The sub is $4.75 and the peppers on a half sub is $0.50 for a total of $5.25.  Yet, every time I order this sandwich they would give me a different price.  Sometimes $6, other times $6.25 and each time I would go over the prices on the menu and tell them that the sub that I ordered is $5.25.

Every time I would challenge them on the price they would have some smarmy reply; "Oh.  Only for you this time," or something equally condecending.

Well, I've had enough of their bad math.  I was in their shop earlier this week and the owner (I think he's the owner) called me the "$5.25 guy."  "Oh," he laughed, "you're the five twenty-five guy! We haven't seen you in a while; that's what we call you, 'the five twenty five guy!'"

I suspect that they are cheating EVERYONE EVERY DAY.  Just think, it's easy to do.  We have busy work lives and race down to get a bite to eat, not thinking that the place you're patronizing is picking your pocket!

Bread was not fresh. In fact I took half of it off and cracked it over my kitchen table at home and my wife jumped. We laughed about how hard it was but you know what? 6$for stale bread isn't that funny. Shame on you American hero.

I got up this morning (yes, morning) craving meatballs. And after a lengthy consideration of buying beef, making some bread crumbs, mincing some herbs... eh... too lazy... I decided that I actually had an urge to get a meatball sub. I had a vague recollection of a place a couple of blocks away called "American Hero" and decided to check it out. So I walked over there and discovered a roomy spot in the shadow of the Citi Building, with about 9 or so tables. I got all set to order my sandwich, and made a horrible discovery.

This shop called "American Hero" DOES NOT SELL MEATBALL HEROES!

Unacceptable. Alright, disappointed, I decided to put off the fulfillment of my craving for another day and merely satiate my hunger. So I went with my old standby sub shop choice: Chicken cutlet with lettuce and mayo. I then watched the counter guy pop a cutlet into the microwave. Taking the sandwich home, I found that the cutlet, of course, was soggy, rubbery and generally over-nuked.

The service is fast and friendly here, but that's all I can say for it.
