Usually I don't go to see art..albeit fine as it is in this case.  But, I'm trying to better myself, you know, as person.  So I put on my new dark rimmed ray-bans and went to see the Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cezanne, and Beyond exhibit.

Tickets are 30 bucks.  And the place was packed with a big line.  I was lucky in that I got tickets from a museum member so we went through the "VIP".  But still, we had tickets for a specific day and time.  Saturday at 2PM. They aren't messing around.

Okay, so the de Young grounds and the building are awesome.  Just as an example, on the side of the building there's a zoo like area with caged animals.  All the animals...sculptures.  Not bad.  Even a Mark Rothko hater such as myself can appreciate this.

As for the packed exhibit hall... it was packed but well run.  They do a good job of getting the hipsters from point A to point B.  It took about 1.5 hrs to go through all the rooms.  After seeing all those masterpieces, you feel like you've seen something special ...even if you don't completely understand it.

Looking at the other ray ban wearing hipsters, I got the feeling that some were out of their element as well, but glad they tried it.  You can go to urban outfitters or amerian apparel any day, but the van gogh exhibit is a cut above.

de Young is beautiful. We went in specifically for the Picasso exhibit for our recent trip. I love Picasso, and being able to see some of his best work first hand was mind-blowing, and I was really glad I was able to visit de Young at the right time.

It was a nice experience, except the fact that the whole time we were in the exhibit it was crowded, with occasional children laughing and playing while visiting the museum with their parents. And despite the different time slots they allow/assign people in to the exhibit, there were still too many people on each of the exhibit section at once.

But all and all, I'm a fan! Oh, and don't forget to take the elevator up to the observation deck on the top of the building. You can see beautiful landscape of the Japanese Tea Garden, the Science Museum, and Golden Gate Park. Beautiful.

One of Herzog + Meuron's greatest buildings in my opinion. The observation deck is so cool and you really get a great view.

They have such an eclectic and respectable collection. I was lucky enough to go when they had the YSL exhibit AND the Maya Lin exhibit at the same time. That just shows the type of artists and shows they attract.

Decided to visit the De Young Museum on Labor Day.  Entering the structure is an interesting journey through a thin crevice which opens to a modern courtyard which explores textures, materials, and the linear effect of man on nature.  Pretty cool!  We wanted to see the Real to Real collection and were pleasantly surprised.

Super cool modern museum located in the natural surroundings of the Golden Gate Park.  I'll definitely be back to continue exploring!

I enjoyed this museum more for the architecture than the permanent collection. The collections were interesting but nothing that really drew me.

I really liked going up to the Observation Deck on the 9th floor and I also liked the view on the 2nd floor of the sculpture garden.

Today is the first Tuesday of the month. What does that mean??? FREE admission to the DeYoung Museum.

I've lived in SF for many many years and I've only been here once or twice. Today was I think my third time, that's averaging about once every 7 years...I'm not too fond of this place, it doesn't have living animals like the zoo or Academy of Sciences. I know, IT IS A MUSEUM, I don't think I appreciate art enough to come a few times a year, like I do with the zoo or Academy. Maybe if I was more intellectually inclined, I would understand and appreciate this place a bit more. I guess I shouldn't compare this place to anything, it stands on it's own.

Throughout the museum...I saw paintings, sculptures, art, & my fav part of the place is upstairs. Upstairs at the tower (9th level) has a GINORMOUS map of SF and a view of the park. This is probably THE BEST attraction here. There were people pointing out where everything was...that was sort of annoying. A guy asked me where we were on the map, that made me feel helpful.

Even though it was a free day, exhibits will still cost you $$$, just like the tactile dome at the Exploratorium.

Now instead of buying a plane ticket to Paris, you can just buy a general admission ticket to see the amazing paintings from Musee D'orsay! Yay!

I highly recommend going through the special exhibitions. Don't forget to make your reservations online! It was pretty small, in my opinion, but still worth it. The place was packed, so I recommend coming early.

Entered the museum & special exhibit for free thanks to a friend's BofA card.  Saved $25!  Gotta love those corp giants.

The special exhibit:  Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cézanne and Beyond: Post-Impressionist Masterpieces from the Musée d'Orsay.  Despite a previous visit to the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, seeing the masterpieces again was wonderful.  Plus, as I learned during my free docent tour, the masterpieces will probably never leave Paris again & were displayed differently than in Paris.  In fact, the Musée d'Orsay renovation will be updated to reflect the De Young's display method.  What a treat to see significant masterpieces without a trip across the pond.

The sculptures in the outside garden were cool.  Especially the apples!

Be sure to take the elevator up to the observation floor (9th) in the tower.  If you're lucky, it will be a clear day with a fantastic view.  You can even see the pyramid waaay in the fidi!

    Spectacular. You must go!

I went for the Post Impressionism exhibit - Van Gogh, Cezanne and Beyond. Amazing. I hated Gaugin before this exhibit. I'm now impressed. I was introduced to entire schools of Artists I've never even heard of!

Anyone that enjoys history or art is in for an amazing treat. There are rooms dedicated to Meso-American art, African tribal art, Pacfic Islander art. Art, art, art!

And the energy coming off the pieces is amazing. I couldn't walk past the African warrior shields - creeptastic. My past life experience cried NO!

Go early, stay late, and enjoy the beautiful grounds.

**Review for the Musée d'Orsay Exhibition**

Went here with my coworkers for our holiday / team outing.

    Free tickets = check.

Tuesday (aka less crowded) = check.

I've always been a fan of the De Young since it reopened ... the whole museum screams modernity at its highest...

However, with the new rules and regulations regarding the Musée d'Orsay Exhibition (no pictures and no sketching) was just ridiculous at its highest. I actually asked my boss if I could breathe within the exhibition itself!

First and foremost: I am an artsy-fartsy person. I went to art school, got a degree in art and I'd like to think I'm creative. I've been to numerous museums (some far better than the De Young itself) so I know and understand rules... taking a picture... no flash = done. I went to Chicago Art Museum and my best friend and I went crazy sketching. Not a single docent told us to put our pencils away. If anything, the docents helped us see the painting from a totally different perspective which was awesome!

    Anyway, here I go...

Upon entering the museum... the old Filipino guy (who clearly had some power hunger issue) was literally yelling at all the ladies entering to take off our purses from our shoulders... no smile, no nothing. Wow. Hi! That clearly sets the tone for the whole day...

As a group, all 10 of us... went downstairs... placed the sticker onto our clothes... and on we went.

It was crowded as predicted... but I didn't think it was also going to be a FART fest! Yup... you read right... FART fest!

We were surrounded by people who were just letting it all go and some. There was no circulation thus... it was disgusting. So disgusting that I hardly got a chance to really examine the exhibition itself b/c I was dying.

Anyway, the exhibit was good... Favorite part: seeing the famous Starry Night by Van Gogh...that alone was surreal.

At the end, I don't know if there's any good days to see this exhibit... but definitely worth it... maybe just wear a gas mask!

Great location in Golden Gate park so even when you're done with the museum, there are other cool places to check out. I last visited a few years ago for a Dale Chihuly glass sculpture exhibit. The staging and lighting was just right for the incredible sculptures. The restaurant is decent and the outside dining is in a really pretty setting. Observatory gives you great views of the area. The only negative that I can think of is the exterior of the building is kind of ugly but luckily indoors is nice.

Nice display of art and artifacts in a modern atmosphere....

I'll never forget this museum.  We were walking up to the entrance when all of a sudden a few cops ran right past us and jumped into the pond to the right of the museum.  One of the onlookers told us this this woman was trying to commit suicide in the pond.  Really?  A pond?

Anyways, this isn't a huge museum but it's a good size and I really enjoyed all the art pieces and artifacts they had to offer.  I remember a lot of artifacts actually and unique things like some sort of building made of bullets.  That was pretty cool.  The rotating exhibit they had when we were there was Masters of Venice, Renaissance painters. Meh, so we skipped this.  You have to pay an additional fee for the exhibits on top of the general admission but I don't remember what the price was.

    * Don't forget to check out the observation tower.  Great 360 view of the city and photo ops.

    Admission prices:
    adults: $20
    seniors 65+:   $17
    students with current ID:  $16
    youths 6-17:  $10
members and children 5 and under free.
    * I also saw some sort of discount if you used public transportation to get to the museum, so keep your ticket stub.
    * I think tuesdays are free from what I heard?  So make sure to check into that if you plan to go on a tuesday.
    * museum store and cafe

Drove up for the weekend to view the Post Impressionist collection loan from the Musee d'Orsay. I was impressed by the set up and the flood of people, but to be quite honest, the de Young has never really been a favourite place of mine. Granted that I am not an art expert (I'm more interested in artifacts) and my ignorance robs me of my ability to fully understand what I'm looking at, but in terms of architecture, organization, and amenities, the de Young is an amazing facility.

I'm sorry but this is a review from an unqualified person who is clueless when it comes to art appreciation, but I will say that the staff here has always been, on every one of my visits, nothing but friendly and informative. The facility is beautiful and the architecture, though too modern for my tastes, is no doubt a sight to be seen.

The exhibits on rotation at this museum are deserving of praise due to the de Young's tremendous reputation and despite my lack of ability to truly internalize the paintings on display, I do always enjoy roaming around.

I was never a huge fan of artwork (unless it's Dali) but I'm becoming more and more appreciative with every new museum I attend. Granted, I still get bored with a lot of things...but it's a "process" right? Slowly but surely.

The park that sits between the de Young and Academy of Sciences is gorgeous on a clear, sunny day. You'll see children running around, playing tag with the water fountains, DSLRs from every angle, and not a single depressed face.

If you have a credit or ATM card with BofA, you get in for FREE the first weekend of EVERY MONTH. That'll save you a hefty general admission fee of about $10 or so.

I came here today on a Mothers Day Weekend and parking was nowhere to be found. I had to actually park about 7 blocks away but thank goodness I'm still young and was able to walk the distance over there. There were two special exhibits on display, the Olmecs and Balenciaga. You can basically just walk into the Balenciaga exhibit for free but you need a scanned ticket for the Olmec exhibition. My favorite (general admission) exhibit was the New Guinea exhibit...the Balenciaga exhibit was like BLAH for me (I don't care for dresses...).

The Observation Deck is pretty neat as you'll get a nice view of Golden Gate Park and San Francisco. And it's free too.

Would I pay $10 to see what I saw today? At this point in time...no I would not (perhaps in the future?). But it was free and I cannot complain and I actually enjoyed my time there.

I have always been a fan of the de Young Museum (although admittedly not the biggest fan of the new architecture. . . says the girl who had engagement pictures taken there!).  The museum has a nice permanent collection and often has interesting exhibits in town.

Last week I went to the Masters of Venice exhibit, which was pretty well done.  Of course, the exhibit itself is comprised of a collection (in this case, from a museum in Vienna), so you can't judge the de Young for the composition of the collection (although, I suppose you could criticize them for showing it at all).  I thought the collection gave a lot of focus to portraiture, which I found interesting.  The descriptions of the artwork and the art movement were good for both people who have studied Venetian/High Renaissance art and those who have not.  All in all, I thought it was well done.

I've been here three times in the past year.
Exhibits are always good here.  I've just been to the Sean Paul Gaultier exhibit and it I'd amazing.  If you have the chance go see it!  It's at the Deyoung until August 2012!

[M] I love the De Young Museum! I finally decided to purchase a membership today with Wayne after visiting the Museum for the third time in the past 2 months. The first time was the King Tut Exhibit in March, Bouquet to Art last week, and the most recent was today. It was quite packed during my first 2 visits (both were on Fridays) so it was quite nice to see that there were less people here today.

[W] This museum place displays modern arts from around the world. It's located where the original Asian Art Museum was in the Golden Gate Park. I definitely recommend to come here during a weekday when there isn't a lot of people and you won't have a hard time finding parking neither. It's great to come here on a nice sunny day because the Japanese Tea Garden is right next door as well as the Academy of Science is right across the field.

When you first come to this museum, it already has artwork BEFORE you go inside. It's neat that they have a "crack" on the floor that extends to the main entrance and you can follow it through many rocks that they have displayed outside the courtyard. This is a pretty big museum especially once you go inside and explore the second floor. There's many things to look at from sculptures, paintings, abstract art, pretty much anything and everything. They even have their own AMISH art area where you can see quilted arts.

Overall, if you enjoy fine arts and museums in general, definitely check this place out.

    Listed in Free stuff?!

I'm putting this under my list of free stuff because it's free to Bank of America card owners during the first full weekend of every month! :)

However, I went to the Olmec exhibit, which wasn't free [$15], but was definitely worth it. It was a really cool exhibit - made cooler because I'd just taken an art history class, focusing on pre-Columbian art, so I knew what was going on - and the docents seemed very knowledgeable, even though I didn't stay with the tour for very long. I loved that a lot of the artwork wasn't behind glass - it just seemed so much more real.

After that, we went to the other exhibits, which were pretty cool. I'm not a very artsy person, but there were definitely some pieces that made me think [my favorite was a castle made out of gun parts]. We were on a bit of a time crunch, but it's definitely a great place to go, especially if you're a BofA member and its the first weekend of the month! :)

Absolutely amazing.  I love museums.  This one I visited with my friend with a graduate degree in history - so I really didn't need a docent - I brought one!

After ogling at the amazing art, we came upon their cafe.  They use the freshest ingredients and have a beautiful place outside to sit and enjoy your food.  They had a wide variety of sandwiches and sweet things.

I came here on BOA free day. Yes, you will have to shell out extra money for the King Tut exhibit and it was sold out until a later time the day that I came. This museum is HUGE, there was a wide range of artifacts and exhibits to look at. I could seriously spend a whole day in here if I took the time to observe everything little thing. I did so much walking around that my feet hurt by the end of the day. The observation tower is a must and you don't even have to buy a ticket or pay to go up and look at the spectacular views of the city. Take your time, walk around, lounge around, and when you are hungry grab a bite to eat at their cafe.

I attended an Artpoint presents: French Kiss event. An homage to French Impressionist art. Overall, I can confidently say I had fun and the event was (for the most part) organized and worth it.
I was invited by someone, and wasn't aware that it was a formal dressy event. So, right as I walk up in jeans I immediately felt uncomfortable and underdressed. Thankfully nobody mentioned it or seemed to mind. Whew. Also, the invitation said "light hors d'oeuvres and an open bar." Right there, I was not at ease. Why would there be an open bar, and not enough food? That seems like a recipe for disaster....drunk people running around a museum. Did I say disaster? I meant fun.

So, I went from drinking sparkling tea to red wine, to vodka and pineapple juice, and even absinthe (not my favorite). By the end of the evening, my not wearing a dress and heels wast the least of my worries.

The art exhibit was gorgeous, lots of different Impressionist artists such as Degas, Monet, Manet, even Whistler. I wish I could remember more of my Art History classk knowledge...

Bonus: The first Tuesday of every month is free admission!

    One of my hangouts.

Friday's are really great at DeYoung since they are open until about 9, have a wine bar and live music.

Their permanent collection is fun - especially if you like South Asian artifacts and European antiquities.

I enjoy all the rotating exhibits and saved a lot of money this year by joining the museum, rather than paying out of pocket to see the Impressionist exhibit.

They also recently had an exhibit on San Francisco Street Art and I had my book signed (yay!)

The building is gorgeous and the tower outstanding, especially on a clear San Francisco day.

For a big city like San Francisco, it's amazing how few quality museums one finds there.  I'm from L.A. so I guess I'm a little spoiled with regard to cultural matters.

I recently saw an exhibit at the de Young of Chinese antiquities.  Pretty good but it's not part of de Young's permanent collection.  Their modern collection is a nightmare, but aren't they all?  Old Masters?  Horribly represented - one finds more in one wing of the Norton Simon museum in Pasadena.

I will say that San Francisco itself is a museum, nearly every street has character and an interesting, layered history.  Thus, so what if San Francisco doesn't have great formal museums.  People there have the entire city.

I am always a member.  There is no excuse not to purchase a membership to support the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco.  This is a 100% awesome place with world-class rotating exhibits from other world-class museums - as in "The D'Orsay is doing some remodeling so we'd like to just send some of our collection to the DeYoung for people to enjoy there."

The new building is modern and a bit out there but attractive in its own way - get there early enough to enjoy the observation platform just before the fog rolls in before sunset.  Bring binoculars.

Don't miss the excellent mesoamerican area - fantastic artifacts, stellae and a gorgeous rubbing by Merle Green Robertson that you can look at for 10 minutes each visit and you'll find something new about it each time.

GO, love some art and become a supporter of your museum!

De Young is a beautiful museum, but the entry fee is not reasonable and it takes more than a day to really go through all that is on display.

My hubby is not a museum enthusiast and he felt tired at the end of our tour of it. The food in the cafe was bad and we were just tired at the end of it. However, we did feel we should come back for one of their friday night events to give it a fairer review.

The best part of our tour of the museum was the view from the observation tower rather than all the beautful art we saw!

    Fantastic museum!

I love that the building itself and the surrounding park are pieces of art, just like the items exhibited inside.

It's a very sleek museum with a somewhat abstract layout...similar to some of the artwork.  There is a huge range in the type of art being displayed - different American art including, oil paintings, textiles, furniture, etc.  One of the most impressive permanent collections is the art from the Oceanic peoples - it's an incredible collection of masks, weapons and idols...a really awesome thing to see, especially since it's an overlooked culture in most art or archeological museums.  They have new/special exhibits all the time so make sure to check the website before you visit.  Some recent ones that were great were YSL (Yves Saint Laurent) and Andy Warhol.

The observation lounge is really cool too - impressive views of San Francisco where you can see all the neighborhoods that make up this beautiful city.

If you can, visit during the first Tuesday of each month when it's free or go on a Bank of America sponsored visit (if you're a B of A cardholder).

Just like the Academy of Sciences and the Legion of Honor, I have been coming here since I was a small child.  I remember the de Young from when it was a coral-colored mediterranean-style structure.  I also remember being BORED TO TEARS at this museum.

Me: MOM.  DAD.  LET'S GO TO THE STEINHART AQUARIUM, OK?  IT'S RIGHT THERE. *tap dances on the wooden floors to hear the echo*

Parents: No.  Just look at the paintings.  Aren't they cool?

    Me: *scowl*

Silly young-Jennie!  Now I'm a member of FAMSF.  For $99, you get a year's worth of admission for yourself and a guest, including free entry to all special exhibits here and the Legion of Honor.  I have seen Van Gogh's Starry Night Over The Rhone (a red-letter day for me) at the Post-Impressionism exhibit, I have seen Jean Paul Gaultier, I have seen the Masters of Venice (what's up, Titian?).  I even stopped in to say hi to King Tut, although he was a little smaller than I expected.  It's organized, although I recommend going to popular exhibits early in the morning for maximum impact.  (But what do I care?  I can just come back again!)

If you're not a member, buying a ticket here will also admit you to the Legion of Honor on the same day.

The special exhibits here (and the Legion) are top-notch.  The permanent collection also boasts a fantastic American Art selection. I remember seeing my first trompe l'oeil here as a child--and saw it again when I was taking American Art in undergrad.  You can find Bierstadt and I think at least one Church here.

The observation deck is also a gorgeous way to end a day at the museum.

My only regret is that I didn't see the Chihuly exhibition when it came around. Never again!

What we got to see from the observation floor perched atop the modern museum was enough to make my trip worth while. Just enough to whet my appetite, I want more!

My friends and I were going to check out the new Academy of Science, but since the line was too long (in a rainy weather), we decided to just hop over to the DeYoung instead. I'm an architecture student so I'm going to solely put my review on the architecture itself.

This building is an art of beauty, the different angles of the building allows great photographs and the materials chosen for the building is just brillant. The corten steel changes over as it weathers and the small pocket green showcases inside is a great relief as you are roaming inside. I find the layout of the museum a bit confusing, but maybe it's because I have no sense of direction. I was also to check out Maya Lin's exhibition while I was there so that was excellent. Which means that I had been there awhile back. The review might have been late, but I don't think the architecture has changed much.

Even if you're not interested in the exhibitions they are hosting, definitely one of the places to see ranked by the American Institute of Architects.

I'm a fan of anything that promotes creativity, passion, and talent. This is where the De Young museum comes in.

What is art? Art is the expression of human emotion through different mediums; and it is beautiful. To me, all art IS beautiful & inspiring; from Picasso to Da Vinci to Monet to Banksy.. even Shepard Fairey. It's all about expression.

When I visited this museum, it was on the free day & the DeStaebler exhibit was on display. DeStaebler's works are scary, marred, yet beautiful. I really enjoyed my day and I was amazed & in awe of all the art work there was. It is located in Golden gate park & once you're done enjoying the museum, you can have a nice picnic with someone you'd wanna share it with.
