whoa, didn't know they got taken over by Blue Bottle. had a few espresso drinks here once. good, but not hands down earth shattering - and the whole measured milk thing always bothered me. i wonder where vincent gallo goes for coffee now.

I have to say the coffee was fine. In fact, it was good, very good even. But this place sucks. A fellow patron asked for sugar and was told it was not available (which is just plain moronic and rude). I take my coffee black so that's not an issue.

But then I got a croissant with my americano. it was hard as cement, and not cheap (I think it cost 4 dollars...for a plain crappy croissant that was that just was awful). I do not exaggerate when I say I tried to tear a piece off and it felt like like, and tasted like, rubber. Awful.

And yes, there is no wifi available (again, not an issue, though even Graffiti Coffee offers for an hour and a half...but whatever), but Blind Mellon's "No Rain" was playing. Which may be the worst song of all time. The subject of a much discussed NPR All Songs Considered Podcast. Just bad. I had to exit there as quickly as possible. It was just...unpleasant. Not cool. Not cool at all.

I drove for more than 30 minutes to get there, and looked for parking for another 10 minutes (yes, I am a coffee snob, but I love checking out coffee joints and there are some great ones in LA, but this is one I would never come back to).

It pains me to give only three stars, as the espresso was great, but to not have other milk options is very disappointing. I very badly wanted to try their lattes but couldn't unless I wanted to spend the rest of the day in the bathroom... Please get other milk options!

No sugar? At all? On purpose? You, Handsome Coffee Roasters, can go fuck yourself.

Today, I ordered a cappuccino. Or, as this nest of pretension calls it, a 5 oz coffee with milk.

I looked for sweetener. Saw none. Asked where it was. Snotty Handsome Coffee Roasters barista, dressed like a lumberjack hairdresser, told me that they don't offer sugar because "they want to provide coffee in its purest form." So I tried it. You know what it tasted like? Coffee, without sugar. Sometimes I want that. But not today. Not for $4. For $4 I want coffee that tastes like what I want it to taste like. And today that was sweet.

So I told him that I wished to return their coffee in its purest form in exchange for my $4 back.

The exchange was made. But snotty barista had to have the final word. "I know it's not for everyone."

Which is true, snotty Handsome Coffee Roasters barista. Very true. Sugarless coffee is indeed not for everyone. But you know what is, snotty Handsome Coffee Roasters barista? I'll tell you: GETTING TO CHOOSE FOR YOURSELF WHETHER YOU WANT SUGARLESS COFFEE OR NOT. PEOPLE WHO LIKE SUGARLESS COFFEE LIKE THAT. AND PEOPLE WHO WANT SUGAR IN THEIR COFFEE LIKE THAT TOO. EVEN MORE.

Now, I understand the need to draw a line somewhere with sweeteners. Because otherwise people will walk all over you with their requests for sugar in the raw, simple syrup, stevia, palm sugar, whatever that is, or even (shudder) Equal.

I get it. You must have limits. But NO sugar? To draw the line at zero sweeteners, period? Something about this has the definite whiff of hipster fascism about it. Not that the MacBook-pounding posers perched on this minimalist temple to self-congratulation's stools seemed to mind having their choices snatched away by Those Who Know Best.

Tap away, hipster sheep! Tap on your screens and keyboards, sipping your bitter brew and pretending to like it. Savor that wretchedness, and the sense that you are above the coffee-sugaring untermenschen. While you can.

But just remember: First they came for our sugar, and we said nothing...

This will probably be the one of the best cups of coffee you'll ever have.
They make the coffee the way that it's supposed to be and the way that it's supposed to taste. No ifs, buts or whys.

I wish they sold other drinks like tea for non-coffee drinkers that come with their coffee-obsessed friends. Or even some snacks. But maybe that's the whole point they are trying to make. DARN GOOD COFFEE. PERIOD.

Pretty awesome coffee. I found out about this place while listening to the Food segment on KCRW. I decided to go check it out and I was happy I did.
I usually go for the Iced Coffee and I have yet to be disappointed.

Tip: They only serve organic/ soy milk and don't expect to get sugar with your coffee

Sadly I'm rather disappointed with the large amount of detractors who harshly complain about the lack of sugar. This place is grounded on the idea that coffee should be respected and there for shouldn't be tampered with, so that you can actually taste what it's all about. Yes, it is bit pretentious, but these people have really gone out to source quality beans and brew them in such a way that you can get the full experience (take a look at the profiles of the roasters on the website, you're actually in pretty good hands). Besides would you drown a good scotch in coke?

As much as one would deny, if any, this is in fact a hipster joint. Located in the middle of a bunch of warehouses in the artists district, where you almost have to be "in the know" to find this place, just screams it. But once found, you come to appreciate the chic minimalism while noticing the undoubtedly handsome roasters that gives it the name.

Their variety is simple and to the point, much like their drinks. You have an option 3oz, 5oz, or 10oz cups. Yes, there is no sugar here, but that's what I love, I'm able to get the full heavy profile in every sip. I can't say I'm an experienced coffee drinker just yet, but I've had my fair share of some quality blends (Intelligentsia, Blue Bottle, Philz), and this place serves some of the best I've had (I plan my days around here whenever I'm in town).

If you're hungry,  Egg Slut is typically parked just outside and they have an awesome agreement with HR to let you eat in. Craving those sweets? Bread Lounge down the street has got you covered. What few things can compare to the combination of a cup of coffee & a pastry?

So yes, this place is not what you are used to but I honestly hope that you can sit down and give this a chance, it'll charm the pants right off you (figuratively speaking).

And just to reiterate that's stated above, suck it up or go to Starbucks, they have all the sugar and non-dairy milk you want.

Good - This was my first venture into finding coffee that would be good without sugar / milk. This was a success. The coffee here is actually good, (coming from a Starbucks type coffee drinker).

Bad - Very limited menu. You either get an espresso or a brewed coffee. That's the menu!

Weird - I had never been to this specific part of town before.

    Recommend - Yes, nice ambiance.

The ultimate pretentious coffee experience. I asked for sugar and they said, "We don't offer sugar, we're coffee roasters." UUUFFF!! By the way, no soy/almond or non-fat milk either.

I get it, you think your coffee is "special," but it's nothing I can't get at Intelligentsia with a little less 'tude.

If you want people to buy into your concept, you have to ease them into it; suggest they don't add sugar, don't force it on your paying customers.

You may be handsome, but you are no gentleman.

OK, I was a skeptic. I went to Handsome with a stash of sweetener in my pocket.

I ordered a cold brewed iced coffee with milk. I figured to be fair I should try it as they sell it and I ended up not using my Stevia In The Raw, it was that good.

Yes, the place is in kind of a random spot but it seems appropriate. The shop is beautiful and the staff was surprisingly welcoming. The menu is short and sweet, if you're a Starbucks Caramel Macchiato kind of coffee drinker this place isn't for you,  but, that's kind of the point. Handsome roasts beautiful coffees for people that appreciate coffee.

My only gripe was that we arrived late in the day and they were out of food, shit must be good.

I was only in LA for 2 days and I regret not having time to get back.

    See you next time, Handsome!

Just a personal comment if you don't mind......
Handsome Coffee Roasters is located in "The Arts District" of downtown L.A..... many have mentioned that in passing. For me, it has a deeper significance and importance. The fact that anyone is reviewing anyone in the "Arts District", is a testament to Joel Bloom, who owned Bloom General Store nearby, and devoted much of his life to developing this part of Los Angeles. I knew Joel through a special shared connection. We both served in a USAF combat photo squadron,  during the late 60's. (601st.com) Reuniting with Joel during the last few years of his life, I found his selfless attitude inspiring. And I have to applaude anyone, including Handsome, for investing in Joel's dream by investing in The Arts District.

And Handsome? I heard about Handsome, accidently, through a quick check in the Coffeegeek.com forum. When I read that three notable specialty coffee names left Intelligensia to do their own thing, out of interest in anything "specialty coffee", I had to check it out. And I did, last week, Thursday afternoon.

I've always found it ironic that coffee, as the largest volume commodity on Earth, next to oil, is probably the most mis-understood. And in my opinion, it's that general lack of knowledge about the coffee bean, from farm to cup, that fosters the sometimes contentious debate we see in print, and see played out at the retail level. And if you've looked at all of the reviews here, you might agree with my opinion that much of the "hub-bub" is about expectations based on the perceiption of Handsome as a traditional coffee shop, rather than a roasterie that offers their coffees "out front", in what I feel is a minimalist shop environment; not a traditional wi-fi accessorized respit for those who need an office with coffee service. As for the coffee itself? Of course it's good, and for what I want when I'm travelling, it's 5-star.

I should mention that I don't even look at menu boards. Their's is short, with which I agree from a business standpoint.  When on the road, I'll ask what coffees a shop is featuring, order espresso shots and "traditional cappuccinos." So I ordered my "traditional" cappuccino, and was served their 5 oz'er in porcelain. I've since learned that they're not running blends for their espresso extractions, but single origins. Regardless, it was worth the trip. And yes, they're only using Clover whole milk... which for many who don't know, accounts for some of the natural sweetness you might taste in your finished drink. Good coffees, if properly espresso-brewed, will include "sweet" as part of its profile... ergo "no sugar needed" if the natural sweetness is enough for you.

So... if you know Barefoot, Sightglass, Four Barrel, and stores like Vivace and Stumptown, and you're at Handsome for the coffee, you should feel reasonably comfortable. While I was thinking this was going to be a destination shop, on my second visit this past week, 05 29 12, early afternoon, I saw many walk-ins. I'm guessing they're getting alot of the film-tv industry members who are working the location shoots in that part of town. (good deal for Handsome.) Their mid afternoon traffic told me that the retail side may be doing better than they anticipated. Or maybe it was part of their plan. (?)

What a cool place to be with all the pretty artsy and hip folk. They all must be making great money too in our terrible economy. It was quite interesting to pay $4 for a cup of coffee right down the street from all the homeless people.

All sarcasm aside, Handsome makes very good coffee. The art is in the roast and they use some of the best beans they can source.

The four dollars I paid surely went down the hatch quickly. I even had to get a $7 juice from the girl behind the cart outside their doors.

I got some beans and a coffee.

    The beans are awesome.

I was slightly disappointed in the coffee, it was pretty boring. It seemed watered down and lacked any sort of real flavor. Also, if i'm paying 4dollas for a single cup of coffee at a fancy coffee joint I'd prefer a manual drip made to order.

Overall I feel LA roasters are more expensive and not quite as good as any of the ones up in the bay area.

    Everybody was nice though.

No more NAZI coffee for me.
Imagine that just because Steve jobs and apple where so passionate about their products they mandated you and imposed you that you could only upload the videos, music and photos to your iPhone, iPod or laptop that they ( apple ) like. Any Other different artist or things that you love and want to have on your iPod or iPad would be immediately declined as handsome coffee does if you ask for sugar, Splenda, honey, tea, soy milk, almond milk etc etc. it's an absolute  NAZI principle.
If Mussolini had ever attempted to tell Italians that they had to have their Cafe without sugar, they would have terminated his dictatorship and murdered him the second day he was in power. The handsome dictators (ups sorry!)! Owners are nice and friendly but I can't deal with greasy whole milk anymore. And I like my sugar or Splenda on my cafe. Just like I had my cafe in Italy for years. You can go today and buy a purist brand like Ferrari, Maserati or ducati, even a fiat cinquecento and the dealership will let you have it in the color that you choose and with as many options as you may want. Because the client is always right. You mess with them, and they never come back.

I think by now coffee shops should understand that not everyone drinks cow's milk. When I asked for a dairy alternative the answer was straight up "we don't have one", like they didn't care. At least their Venice location caters to non-lactose drinkers. I should have just stuck to that spot, but I also do expect consistency in a business with multiple locations.

Excellent coffee. I had an espresso with 5oz milk and it was perfect. Not burnt, great flavours. Hats off to the roasters.

I love the espresso + milk concept. This way you know what you are getting exactly. We are from Australia and have found it difficult ordering espresso here and finding consistency. Every place seems to have different names or do the same coffee differently. This way, there are no surprises.

The staff was awesome, the coffee was good...but no wifi :(

I work from home, so coffee shops become my refuge from isolation. Its industrial decor matches the district warehouses, but the hard, tall stools don't make you want to stay too long (and I'm short at 5'2, I have issues when my feet can't touch the ground.).

Also, it gets really, really hot late afternoon.

I had originally heard about this place from one of the baristas at Balconi, which is definitely one of the top coffee places in LA, so I was pretty excited to check it out. It didn't disappoint. They have a really large, somewhat industrial looking, yet comfortable space. I ordered the espresso with milk, and for having recently started making a conscious effort to stop drowning my coffee in syrups and sugar, I really enjoyed it. Definitely had a pretty bitter kick to it, but the smallest size was just the right amount for me.

I think the best part about this place for me was just the friendliness of the baristas, though. I'd been waiting for a friend for a bit, and the guy at the counter noticed and was really sweet about it, saying something like, "Oh, it looks like you're waiting for someone, but I can get something started for you if you'd like." Also, my friend and I ended up chatting past their closing hours since we lost track of time, but none of the staff said anything...! They just hung around, waited for us to finish up, and wished us well as we exited.

One thing to note is that it's kind of out there in terms of location... It's definitely not the kind of place that you'd just stroll to after lunch or dinner. But for the sheer niceness of the people there and the supremely good coffee, it's definitely worth it.

People seem to love or hate this place. We came here to get some iced coffees to eat with our egg slut truck goodies. Not many tables in here, mostly counter seating. The decor is pretty cute.

We knew ahead of time that they don't offer sugar and too many types of coffees, only expresso and iced coffee. Which we were fine with because we like iced coffee with milk only although I can see how this turns some people off, especially those who didn't see the reviews on yelp ahead of time.

The coffee here is decent although not amazing.

They were filming a movie near here so parking wasn't easy, although it seems that normally there is plenty of street parking.

Choosing coffee has become almost as complicated as naming your kid or your pet. Whipped. Blended. Half-caf. Room for cream ... someone please make it stop! Well, Handsome Coffee ROASTERs has.

Simple menu of 3 size options with corresponding prices. The coffee is delicious. Smooth and strong too. Organic milk is always appreciated. No sweeteners which makes some people irate. Do you salt your food before tasting it too?

The space is cool, industrial chic with plenty of seating. Clean as well. Abundant amount of light. A nice place to sit near the window and enjoy a moment. Plenty of street parking.

I want to buy the stuffed beaver. Or steal it. Whichever.

***To the reviewers who say it's in the middle of nowhere and nobody lives here so why would it be located in DTLA, are you stupid? Do you not see all those converted loft buildings with no vacancy?

Yay! Boyfriend and I have been meaning to try this place for a while, so we decided to give it a try last week.  There is free parking in the back, so yay for not having to park in some ghetto lot for $5!

The barista who helped us was so nice!  He seemed very cultured in the art of coffee and trained some of the best of the best in coffee (including the head barista at Portola), so you know the man knows his stuff! The only drinks pretty much available are iced coffee and lattes, so I would advise you to not come here if you like decadent ice blended drinks or what not.

Our two small lattes came out to $8 and packed the perfect punch of energy! Honestly, if you're drinking a latte, you don't need a Starbucks Venti size anyways....a small size has enough caffeine! They have the CUTEST cups and can do great latte art. Our barista checked up on us often to make sure our drinks were good.

Yes, it's true, they don't offer sugar (sneak a pack in if you're desperate for some), and no, they don't have flavored syrups - but they make amazing lattes and they deserve 4 stars. I didn't give this place 5 stars because of the lack of variety (at least Portola has mochas and lemonade), but I DO understand that they specialize in what they are good at here and they have worked so hard to make that perfect latte!

Anyone who values delicious, good quality coffee should try this place! Shout out to the amazing baristas who work here, you guys made our experience memorable with your plethora of coffee knowledge!

I really enjoyed this place. The location is stylish and made for casual coffee drinking, not for camping out with a laptop. When I visited, the place was buzzing with people chatting and enjoying their coffee in ceramic, not paper. That was a big deal for me; I don't order a cappuccino unless I can sit and enjoy it without half of it sticking to a paper cup.

Unfortunately, I was on my way out of town and was only picking up beans to brew at home. I decided to get some drinks for the road, too. I got an iced coffee. The barista asked if I wanted cream and I said no. (I prefer little milk, if any, and don't like cream.) I ordered a cafe latte for the bf. I noticed that a review said you can't get a cafe latte, but we got one.  I stopped to see if there were sugar packets in case the bf wanted some. I didn't see any and quickly realized that they were serious about coffee and likely didn't offer it for a reason. I sipped my iced coffee to see if I wanted a splash of milk in it; it was delicious, so I certainly did not. It tasted like the cold-brewed iced coffee I make at home. Took the cafe latte to the bf and he loved it. As with any good coffee, no sweetener was needed at all.

I loved the arts district when I lived in LA, and it has only gotten better. This place offers a pop-up farmers' market one night per week, and they let food trucks park outside (eggslut was there when we stopped in). Next time I'm in LA, I'm making time to sit down and enjoy a cappuccino here. In ceramic.

My first exposure to Handsome was when they were the featured roaster at my local coffee shop (Johnson Public House in Madison).  My initial impression was positive. Earlier this month, I took a trip to LA and had the opportunity to check out their new location in the Arts District.  First thing, it was nice to be greeted by the familiar face of Nicely, formerly of Intelligentsia in Venice.  I never expect anything but a fantastic shot of expresso pulled by him.  I also got a cup of the drip to go, which was good but not spectacular.  I brought back home a 12 oz bag of a Rwandan roast and  used to my handy Chemex to prepare a cup.  The end result was definitely better than what I experienced from the shop (they use a standard drip machine).

Handsome is a place for the true coffee purist.  You won't find any fancy frozen blended sugared drinks.  Like what others have said, you won't find any sugar or sweeteners at all!  If you enjoy coffee for the pure taste and flavors, Handsome is your place.  If not, that's perfectly cool too.......you have plenty of other options out there.

"We don't offer sweeteners"..... Pfft. I won't blame the barristas  on this one, but the policy sucks. Like many, I happen to like my coffee on the side of sweet. (and I DO know good from bad beans/roasting) Much like pour over, this is unnecessarily pretentious.  I basically threw five bucks on the ground. (no pun intended)

Good coffee, great service. Horrible location.

I already knew their policy of serving it black which is fine with me. I think it is the only way to drink coffee.

So if you can only drink your coffee white and sweet, this is not the place for you. Go to someplace that doesn't respect their product. There are plenty of those around.

Barista was very friendly.. shop was industrial/minimalist, had a cool vibe.

If you're going in for what would be a "grande" sized drip, get ready to spend $4. That price I'm afraid will keep me from going back. Can't find it in my heart to spend that much for a small cup of joe. Sad too, because my studio is 30 seconds from Handsome (think I just found my new band name).

The coffee was aiight.. not great. Didn't taste like a $4 cup. Roast was kinda light yet bitter/ almost burnt tasting. Maybe that's what a really fancy cup of $4 coffee is supposed to taste like? I dunno.

Best of luck to these guys.. curious to see how long they'll last over there. Might be the wrong location for such a high-end shop. Maybe I'm wrong.

I'm a black coffee snob & that's one of the reasons I love this place so much. No lowfat, nonfat, soymilk nonsense & no sugar or sugar substitutes. Whole milk only or take it black, the way coffee was meant to be tasted. Their iced black is quite possibly the best I've had I all of LA. They dilute it just a bit to soften the acidity, but if you take it with milk, you get the whole flavor. They also roast their beans in house & you can see their coffee roaster through the glass wall.

Their baristas wear ties & denim aprons - very handsome! And their very modern decor is also very handsome. Their menu is painted outside next to the front door, it's simple and non-confusing. A nice gem in the Arts District.

Such snobbery! No simple syrup or sugar in house. Yes, I agree - good coffee does not need any sweetening but your coffee didn't reach that point of perfection for me and I needed just the smallest dash of simple syrup to reach my midafternoon caffeine bliss *just my opinion*

If you think Starbucks is weird with it's own ordering lingo - that tall, grande, venti jibberish - Handsome Coffee Roasters has it's own code as well...

Barista - you ordered an iced 10?
Me - uh what? No, I ordered an iced latte
Barista - that's what we call our iced latte

Yeah the coffee is pretty good but this place is a lil too stuck up for me.

One of the best things about LA is the presence of so many of the country's best coffee brewers.

I can see a lot of the resentment coming from their lack of flavoring (only lattes, caps and coffee) and their lack of wifi (unless you have Time Warner Cable in which case you in fact do have wifi at Handsome wassup?!)

but this is the best cup of coffee in town. It's also the best cappuccino and latte. They aren't the winners in the cold brew department, but admittedly Im not much a fan of iced coffee so I can't really find it in me to knock them for that.

The space is beautiful, the baristas are awesome and its in my favorite part of Los Angeles. This place is special.

Also, the reason for having no sugar here is because the coffee is that good, that it doesn't need to be sweetened in any way. This coffee will give you the shakes/jitters to last the entire day, my kind of stuff! The minimal selection of treats were simple - croissant or sea salt chocolate chip cookie. You tell me? Oh ya, I went for the cookie ($2) and split it between four. It reminded me of Matchbox Kitchen's cookies, best chocolate semi sweet and a little bit of Maldon sea salt on top! Grab one for a sweet addition to your $4 iced coffee. The iPad ordering is my favorite, easy, paperless and you can save yourself as a customer in their database. Oh and don't forget to instagram the S*** out of the awesome Handsome Coffee Roasters van in the back lot.

    A coffee-lover's paradise!

Ask to see their roaster in the back - it's amazing!

Handsome makes incredible coffee, is a relaxed environment with baristas that truly know/love coffee.

Pick up a bag of beans while you're there.  They are freshly roasted on-site.  They have "adventure" and "comfort" roasts, depending on what your preference is.

From afar, this place can be kind of over-the-top. Intimidating even. The aprons; the ultra-minimalist, Scandinavian interior; the actual coffee roasting operation. That said, upon entering the place, it is fairly straight-forward, and the staff are friendly and eager to help.

The décor is very slick and reminiscent of trendy coffeehouses in Oslo, Copenhagen, and Malmö. Brushed metal and steel surfaces, with wooden communal tables. The space is airy and full of light. It feels very open, and is a nice place to hang out. The location is in a somewhat barren and bleak part of the Arts District, with lots of heavy industry and warehouses. There are a few scattered gems in the immediate area, but there is no real consistency or contiguity.

The coffee, too, is fabulous. I would have expected pour over coffee, given the emphasis on artisanal coffee. However, thermos or not, both the coffee and espresso offerings are wonderful. The 3oz and 5oz coffees are the same price, btw. In addition to their good coffee, I appreciate Handsome's ethos: basically, going back to simple coffee. A trip to Starbucks or Coffee Bean will reveal a menu full of ice cream and iced-based drinks, not to mention a wide selection of fruit and other non-coffee drinks. I laud Handsome's efforts for taking it back to the basics.

With a minimal menu of espresso, espresso with milk, black coffee, or coffee with milk, this place has to be really good, right? It is. One of the best cups of coffee I've ever had. Atmosphere is awesome - hip, industrial, and artsy. Minus one star for the expense, but I will definitely return.

The space oozes industrial sex appeal and I bet that beast of a roaster is a handsome one.

I don't get them, but I can appreciate and respect what they've got going on. More so after reading the following tid bit. dearcoffeeiloveyou.com/t…

But in the end, they are not for me, and they will be ok with that.

I'm an Iced Americano kind of gal with a scoch of milk and they don't offer my beverage of choice. Sure I tried their cold brew but it wasn't my cup o' joe.

    They can't be everybody's Huckleberry.
