Fun place to explore the old things in the past. So many great things to view, I went on a good day it seems since the weather wasn't too hot and cold and the view was just gorgeous.
There was a lot of things to view including painting sculptures mazes and different water stream sounds that are amazing to hear.
It isn't overly crowded but there was a security guard that was following us around- Cactus garden definitely a good sightCactus garden definitely a good sight

Beautiful way to spend a day in LA. Honestly you can spend the whole day there and probably not see everything they have to offer. Getting lost in the art, seriously you can get lost the buildings wind and the art just leads you to another hall of treasures, level after level. You can bring your own picnic lunch and eat on the lawn or patio tables on a nice day out, or try the restaurant that looks amazing all while enjoying a beautiful hill top view of LA. To only pay $15 parking its a steal even if your not into all the artsy stuff, the garden and view with good company you can't go wrong.

One of my most favorite places on Earth! I try to make a trip here at least once a year, and I will have to say, no matter how many times I've been here, this place still takes my breath away. The artwork is amazing, the architecture is phenomenal, and it's generally just a great place to relax and get cultured.
One of my favorite things about this place is that there's free admission! Although parking does cost $15 after an hour, but there isn't an additional fee after a certain amount of hours. As much as I do love other museums, I appreciate that I don't have to pay $10-$15 for parking and then another $7-$15 for admission. Also another great thing about their parking, if you pay for parking there, you don't have to pay again if you want to go visit the Getty Villa in Malibu the same day!
There are so many wonderful exhibits to go see, ranging from medieval European artwork to modern contemporary. It's also good for kids, there are a couple of kid friendly exhibits and there's a big nice grassy area for them to let loose in afterward lol. The garden is very beautiful. Some of their outdoor artworks that contain water right now are closed though unfortunately because of the drought, but I appreciate their efforts to help the drought instead of worsening it, and they still do look beautiful without the water! -

I can't believe it was all free (besides the $15 for parking). It was huge and it takes most of a day. There is a tram that takes you up to the museum and you see beautiful views on the way. It wasn't very crowded when I was there, but I came on a Monday. There are tons of amazing views of the city and you get to see a lot of famous paintings and sculptures. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to tour the whole museum, but the parts I saw were all wonderful and they have a large and extensive collection of art. Other than art, there are lots of beautiful gardens, and the environment is picturesque and would be perfect for a picnic.
-
Beautiful grounds, lovely experience. If I lived in the area, I'd come here all the time. I didn't get to spend as much time as I wanted, but did get to run through a few exhibits. To be honest the strengths of this institution are probably the architecture and grounds, more so than the exhibits and art, although that's probably a matter of personal taste. The gardens are pretty, and there's a good view of LA on your way up. They have a patio where you can sit and enjoy a beer or two.
No entrance fee, parking is $15. The tram comes pretty quickly, but it's not a bad walk up to the museum from the parking lot. -

If you decide to go to the Getty villa the same day as the Getty center, be sure to bring your parking pass so you can get reimbursed and pay for parking only at one place.
Came here on a Friday afternoon and it actually wasn't that crowded. Had lunch inside their cafe which offered beautiful seating outdoors overlooking LA.
Favorite parts included the contemporary art section, seeing the outdoor cacti, gardens and water fountain. Enjoy the outdoor views - they are spectacular!!!

In a time where the economy is just starting its climb back up you would have never know we were every in trouble in this wonderland.
The architecture of the building alone is exquisite. We spent the majority of our time in the garden tour. Marveling at the Italian imported stone for the structure.
Big props to the Getty leveraging the use of groundwater for their gardens and turning off the fountains to conserve water in the drought. Others in California should follow their lead, even with an unlimited budget they are frugal and not blind to the fact that money might not always buy everything.
$15 to park, no time limit. The "food court" more like mini cafe had a great selection of hand crafted sandwiches and salads that looked delicious. They also had wine, beer and champagne. A picnic in the garden would be a great day date!- Views of LAViews of LA

One of my favorite places in LA. Not only is the Getty Center a world class art museum, with a great variety of both rotating and permanent exhibits, but it is also a beautiful garden that you can easily spend most of a day relaxing in. The architecture of the museum could be an exhibit in and of itself. To top it off, the views out over the city are incredible and make for great photo opportunities.
Parking is $15, which is only annoying until you realize that admission itself is free. That makes the Getty a downright bargain compared to many other museums, especially if you come with a few friends--the Met in NYC wants $25 a head! If you come by public transit, it's totally free. Riding the tram is a bit annoying when there's a long wait, but the views on the way up are fun.
There are a couple of nice cafés and coffee carts where you can grab a quick snack and something to drink while taking in the gardens and the panorama of LA. Prices and quality are surprisingly reasonable.- GardensGardens

Listed in Yelp 100 2014 Challenge!what parking and a museum? well the art is free but you pay a bit for parking and any overpriced grub.
my mother and i prefer more impressionist to modern pieces sans photography, greeks and old furniture.
she's already hit lacma and there wasn't an interesting exhibit. i reserved the village but she wanted to see her best bud van gogh so we came here. some buildings are connected so for gps deprived folks like me, be sure to pick up a map!
lots of fun pic ops with their outdoor area. peaceful and beautiful.
the gift shop is priced as expected with some fun prezzies to take home. -
Great views of the city. Free admission. Nice places all over to relax at. Art in many different buildings.
The Getty is pretty good. You only have to pay for parking.
Also, If you are trying to get here using your navigational system, it'll take you to the wrong spot so don't use the address listed on Yelp. -

What a gorgeous place! The amount of art fit into one museum is just incredible. There are basically 5 different areas. 4 wings (North, East, South, and West) and the garden area. And I believe all 4 wings have 3 levels to them. In all honesty you could spend all day at this museum. If you are a history buff or art junkie this is an amazing place to just kill an entire day. Go first thing as the museum opens, take your time to really look at every piece of art there and read the little story behind it and take a leisurely walk through the garden and next thing you know it is closing time.
There is the option to get a set of headphones and a recorder that will give you some information about certain paintings and art work. And in some of the rooms there are magnifying glasses to help you see in greater detail some of the art.
Since there is a drought in California right now some of the water displays were shut off which was slightly disappointing since I had never seen them active before, as this visit was my first. But, in the garden area there was a cute waterfall working. THe garden is beautiful all on its own, so I definitely recommend checking that out.
It can be a LOT of walking though and my back couldn't handle more than a couple hours being there and walking all the steps so we didn't get to view all of the exhibits but I will be back soon to feed my inner artist.- St Christopher stained glassSt Christopher stained glass

One day is not enough to really appreciate and take in all the Getty has to offer!!
Beautiful Renaissance artwork, books, paintings. One of my most favorite eras. Take the time to read the descriptions and look closely at the history! With that said, this place can take a good amount of time if you're like me and want to soak up all the history and art. So bring comfortable shoes!! How some people wear heels or dinky sandals, more power to you! Ya'll look cute, but I know my feet would be mad at me at the end if the day! Another note, there were children's activities, small plays on the stage and demonstrations (fencing, live classic music tunes). Very family oriented. I can only hope that when I have munchkins of my own, this will still be going on! For now, taking the little nephews here will be my next goal!
And for sure, don't get too close. I knew to keep my distance yet I was still told I was too close. But ok, I respect that.
All we paid for was parking, $15! First hour is free but you'd def want to take longer than that!
I am definitely going to plan more trips here. Maybe even bring a blanket and picnic items to enjoy an entire day here!! -

This museum was left as a gift to the people of Los Angeles. J. Paul Getty was an amazing man for leaving us this treasure. The building itself sits like a palace in the hills with a breathtaking view of downtown and across to the sea. The architectural aspects of the Getty Center are truly works of art in themselves.
The collection housed within its walls is incredible. Although the paintings are magnificent, the furniture and photography are equally impressive. The great thing about the Getty Center is getting to check out the Getty Villas and the Center for the same price. Free! All you have to do is pay $15 for parking and they will validate you for the other. Definitely worth the trip and they also have a cafe at both locations if you want to grab a snack.- Irises by Van GoghIrises by Van Gogh

During my time in LA, I was so busy and bucket-listed the Getty Center but never had time to visit. Finally got around to it and was very impressed the very moment I drove into the facility.
Admission is free, parking is great, enclosed (but paid) like $15; $10 after 5:00 p.m.
I had no idea that I had to take a hovertrain tram up a mountain!
The architecture follows the two naturally occurring ridges of the hills. The views from the highest point of the center are of Los Angeles from Brentwood.
The museum entrance with it's large set of steps is spectacular. As you enter the rotunda, there will be many ways to get lost. GRAB A MAP to find the paths to all the pavilions. The fountains and gardens I visited were a work of art, the Cactus Garden and Central Garden are a great place to sit and calm your mind. The fountains are either on or off dependent on LA's drought warning. There are several galleries to explore, even art (painting/sculptures/antiques) pieces that are protected from visitors and the elements itself (natural light). There are also tours available.
When hunger strikes, the public cafeteria & the terrace cafe are a good spot to eat a packed lunch or sample some higher elevation grub.
The Center is a day's activity. Time management is necessary and there is lots to see. -

A place to appreciate art and architecture both indoors and outside. $15 for parking, but there is no admission fee! Didn't expect that we had to take a tram up to the actual museum. There can be a bit of a wait, especially on busy days, but the line moves pretty fast.
There's a wide variety of displays and exhibits to check out, but a couple notable ones that I enjoyed were:
- the garden
- panoramic views of LA
- the room displays with all the luxurious furniture
We also ran into a pretty funny museum worker who entertained us with his multi-lingual skills.
Will be back again the next time I'm in the area! Always something new to check out and just a great atmosphere overall. -
Just like everyone is saying, The Getty Center is definitely a great date spot! My boyfriend took me here on my birthday and we were able to enjoy a picnic on the lawn together here. It was such a beautiful day in September.
It all begins with a tram ride up from the parking lot that gets you ready for a beautiful day ahead. There's so much to say from the various exhibits: traditional to modern art and photography as well as the outdoors: the maze garden, the statues and especially the view.
Look out for their free summer concerts also. Those are always a steal! I got to see Mayer Hawthorne here with some friends and we had a great time =)- maze gardenmaze garden

Those are always the first thoughts that come to mind when I see the Getty. An incredible structure, overlooking an incredible city, coupled with some of the finest weather in the world.
Parking is $15 at the base of the hill, where a tram will transport you to the top (and the Getty). Admission is free and is highly accessible for the public, a real privilege for all those who visit. The architecture is breathtaking, profiled against the bluest skies and lightest breezes. If you can, I encourage you to bring a blanket and perhaps a small picnic, the gardens and grass squares are perfect underneath that California sun.
The art is fantastic, where they're broken the collection into various structures so that the visitor will get the chance to stretch in the massive central courtyard when switching exhibits. The tours are extensive and quick, so be sure to slip in one or two when you visit!
The Getty is a fine museum, a sincere monument and tasteful gift for the public. I will always make this a stop in LA. Cheers. -

The good news? It's free entry. The sucky news? Parking is $15. However, the first hour is free, so theoretically, you can stay for 40ish minutes and then move your car out then come back in, and your experience can be totally free (I have not tested out this theory yet)!
Just like any museum, you can come with family, friends, or just by yourself and nobody would think you're a weirdo. It's also perfect for a daytime date. The views of the cityscape rival the Griffith Park Observatory and their gardens are extraordinary. And that's even before you go inside to see the artwork.
Pro Tip- If you bring a date to here, you only need to know 2 terms: Realism and Impressionism. If it looks real, it's most likely Realism. If it looks like someone was painting on crack, then it's Impressionism. Just drop those terms, and you'll look like an educated mofo. You should also randomly pick out a painting and stare at it and say something like, "This...is...beautiful..." and run the last scene of Rudy in your head where coach finally lets him play in the big game so you look like you're about to tear up. Trust me, NOBODY will argue with you, and you'll seem deep.
The Getty also has 3 food places. There's a grab-and-go sandwich joint, a cafeteria-style cafe, and a nice restaurant. It really depends on whether your date is a $ girl, a $$ girl, or a $$$ girl. Up to you, bro.
If you're from out of town, the Getty Center is a must-see. And if you're an LA native and haven't been here yet, then what the Hell are you waiting for? I'm being serious. Stop what you're doing right now and go! -

One of my all time favorite places in Los Angeles, and one of my absolute favorite museums ever. There's been so many times that I've just come to the Getty to sit and relax on the garden lawn when I'm in the area.
You enter on Getty Drive and get a ticket for your parking (make sure to keep it with you). There's 7 floors of parking underground, and a lot of times the first 5 are packed and the bottom two are pretty empty so we don't waste time and just go all the way down. Get in the elevator and when you're on the tram level you'll walk through security and go wait for the tram. You also have the option of walking up to the Getty but it's about a 10-15 minute walk all uphill.
If you miss the tram, you don't have to wait too long because they arrive every 4 minutes!
Get to the actual museum and it's absolutely gorgeous. The design of the museum, all the way from the buildings to the floor all around is so distinct and beautiful. There's so many wings, or "pavilions" with different types of art works. There will be signs everywhere with the different exhibits that are visiting the museum at the time, so you won't feel that you're missing out or that you're not aware of anything!
During the summer they have really fun concerts outside at the museum with food vendors all around. People bring their blankets and sit with their families or just jam out next to the stage with their beers in hand.
The garden itself is absolutely gorgeous! I love laying out on the green grass on a summer day and soaking up the sun.
Keep in mind that the fountains have all been turned off (except for the waterfall) due to the drought.

Normally this isn't the type of thing I do, museums and all that, for example, while in Paris went to the Louvre out of sheer obligation- "Ugh, here we are in Paris, it's December, it's cold as hell, I guess we should go to the Louvre, just to say we went and bonus, we will get out of the cold air!" We took down the Louvre, a place you could literally spend a week straight 12 hours a day in about 30 minutes. I appreciate art, but not in a classical way.
But, my parents were in town so off we go to the Getty. I must say I enjoyed myself and not just because my parents are awesome and highly entertaining, but the ride up the hill to the Getty on the tram was very beautiful as was the entire grounds.
True to form, the whole art part was lost on me as I raced through the buildings, but the outside grounds and garden areas and just the general view of the surrounding areas are amazing. It's a great spot to take some photos and just relax on the lawn or a table outside.
The special art exhibit the time we went was artist James Ensor, a Belgian painter and print maker who were pretty Avant guard and shocking in his art. I found this to be the most interesting art in the Getty. Everything else was amazing I'm sure, but how many paintings can you see of fat naked ladies from the 17th century and dudes in dresses.
I see online they also have special events and concerts here which would be a cool time to come check out the Getty and experience the outside grounds. Any excuse, just don't make me go back inside! -

I love The Getty! It has everything I love, such as:
- Art & History: They have many different exhibits centered around different eras and georgraphic locations. Sometimes an exhibit will focus on paintings, some will be on photography. It's very well diverse and always interesting. I like that you get to read the background of each item. So educational!
- Garden: Uh, who doesn't love the Getty's outside garden? It is beautiful! So many pretty flowers everywhere. I love strolling around here. It's essentially art in real life! :)
- View of LA: I am a sucker for views. It makes me feel really relaxed. Nice to look out and reflect about life. It's something about looking down at the world that helps put things in perspective. On a nice day, man, even with that LA smog, the view is pretty nice!
I highly recommend The Getty to anyone who comes to LA for a visit. It's free!!!! -

Extensive collection of religious art, sculptures, and beautiful outdoor gardens. Exhibit of Josef Koudelka's black and white photographs. Small collection of Monet paintings, Rembrandts on loan, and Van Gogh's Irises. Parking is $15 and entry is free.

I came here after it was recommended by many friends and family. We got here early Sunday, and it wasn't too crowded just yet. We walked around the garden whichever as really nice, great views and lots of photo opportunities. There are cool little things around the campus as well, that are little pieces of art on its own. There are many exhibits to see inside as well. After walking around we had lunch with an amazing view at the restaurant.
Overall this is a super nice/cheap place to visit. Parking is $15, $10 if you go after 5. There is a tram that you can take to the top of the museum. Entrance to the museum is free. -

My heart will always belong to the Getty Villa but the more I visit the Getty Center, the more I've fallen in love with this museum. It also helps to be in the good company of a loved one or one who appreciates art and architecture.
My boyfriend and I try to make it out here on Saturday evenings when they have extended hours, discounted parking rates, and during the summer, a free concert in the courtyard. We were just here for all of those and to catch the Jackson Pollock 'Mural' piece before the exhibit closes in June.
This past Saturday the Jonathan Wilson Band was performing and we should've been more prepared. I should've worn my bohemian sundress with a jean jacket and floppy hat, while the boyfriend should've sprouted a majestic beard and Jesus-length hair. And we should've brought blankets and a light snack, but that's OK; we stayed for a few songs and then headed inside to the Pollock exhibit.
It should also be noted that the museum cafe/restaurant also stays open later on Saturdays, or at least during these events (Saturdays Off the 405). Parking is $10 instead of $15 after 5:00 PM.
We will most certainly be back! So many pictures to take and so much great art work to take in. It's always a nice time at the Getty, and on the plus side, you're not far from the freeway, making the trip into downtown for dinner not entirely complicated. -
the 1700's watercolor and pastel gallery is mind blowing.
Degas......Goya......Monet......Cezanne......Renoir.....
The list could go on for ever.
In the photography exhibit they have an original Henry Fox Talbot calotype print "Carriages and Parisian Townhouses" that is over 170 years old. I am assuming it is the original and it was mind blowing to look at. As a technical printer, looking closely at a print like that is actually a near life changing event. It's a reminder that the things we take for granted, the advent of digital photography comes from the hard work of people like Talbot.
This is just an amazing collection. It's as if an art history book exploded on to the walls of this place. In fact, I believe that many pieces I have read about in art history books over the years belong to this collection. Not only that, as I walk thru galleries in my own cities art museums many of the pieces are on loan from this collection.
The center it self is also a work of art and as you move from building to building you become part of it. They want you to learn and enjoy as much as possible on your visit and the physical environment helps you forget about the day to day life and appreciate the art.
On this particular Thursday I saw at least 20 school field trip groups. It's nice to see children get that exposure. This place is amazing. I would suggest taking a whole day to enjoy it.- The tram up to the Getty Center MuseumThe tram up to the Getty Center Museum

What a wonderful place to spend the day! This museum is one of the very best I've ever been to, and that's including all the famous European ones. Best part is that it's free to visit. All you have to pay for is $15 for parking, which is a bargain considering how beautiful and educational the museum is. There is an extensive amount of European art, and some are as old as 500 years! There is so much to see here, and one day is certainly not enough. Every Los Angelino must visit this gem asap.

You know locals ignore places of note because they're just there and they're not going anywhere? Well, LA locals and OC locals, if you haven't been here, you are definintely missing out. It's almost as bad as missing your own b-day party that you planned yourself.
Three things to remember:
1) Plan well for traffic. We went here on a weekday and we were stuck in traffic for an hour. Come early.
2) This place has a lot to see. You cannot spend just one hour here and see and appreciate anything. Come early.
3) Admission is FREE! The downside is you get charged for parking ($15). You make that up by how awesome this place is. You don't just break even, it's a WIN! Don't worry about brining cash; they take plastic.
Breathtaking views on the tram that takes you to the Museum, the staff makes sure boarding and disembarking is organized and a pleasant experience for everyone.
The exhibits are great; very clean museum with adequate presence of staff to help out and keep others out of trouble (haha). Adequate exhibits from ancient times to the modern eras of art. The art is located in 4 distinct buildings. There are also outdoor sculptures for people to look at. There is also an outdoor path and garden with the most awesome pool and green maze-like structure in the middle of the pool. A pic is worth a thousand words, so I took one.
There are a couple of cafes and a cafeteria style dining area. They're a little pricey but it beats going hungry.
The only gripe about this place is with the different buildings, without a map, it's easy to get lost, mistake on building for another, or miss one entirely. I fear we missed one because we didn't take a map when we went around. I wish there was one central building, but alas, most people love the fact that this museum's exhibits are spread over the several buildings, making place unique. I just got lost and confused. Yeah, I know; it's my fault.
If you're a LA or OC native, why are you still reading this? Go now! If you're not a native, this is an awesome museum. Go now!- Athena, goddess of wisdomAthena, goddess of wisdom

Who knew there was so much culture awating in my own backyard? The Getty Center is located right off the 405 just north of Sunset on Getty Center Drive. It was built by the Getty family and entrance is free. Parking at the Center costs $15 per car and there is ample parking in the garage. All of the staff at the museum from the parking attendants on up is very friendly and knowledgeable. There is a tram to take guests from the parking lot to the museum although I did see a few people braving the hill up (very steep and long) as well as coming back down again. The tram was comfortable and the lines moved pretty quickly. There is only one tram.
I was there on a weekend so there was live entertainment on the stages in the courtyard with many people stopping to watch.
Part of the charm of this museum is in the architecture and landscaping. There is an overlook where you can get a panoramic view of the city. Really gorgeous! There is also a beautiful garden which was currently being renovated but still had a wide variety of unusual plants and flowers arranged artistically throughout the area. There are multiple different water features as well including streams and waterfalls as well as pools. It looks like one of the streams has been rerouted to accommodate the remodeling of the garden but it appears that there would be a rather large waterfall going down into the garden itself when it is running.
There are multiple buildings with multiple levels and different displays. You can either take your time and meander through everything or find out what displays you wish to see and focus on those to maximize your enjoyment. There are guided and audio tours available as well.
This is a must see for anyone coming to the area and is great for families on a budget as you just pay the one parking fee and can enjoy the rest of the museum. I will definitely be back for more! -

Parking is $15, but the museum itself is free so I recommend packing up your car with a few friends and splitting the cost of parking, that's what I did.
There are works of art from recognizable names like Monet, Van Gogh, and Degas. Additionally, there are sculptures that dot the exterior landscape, and scenic views of the 405, well, not so scenic, but it will give you an indication of the traffic conditions. In all seriousness, the outdoor area is spectacular, except for the stark white stone that's everywhere and is blinding on a sunny day.- Kids: breaking dragons jaws and everything elseKids: breaking dragons jaws and everything else

Its easy for bruins to get here: just take a bus for 20 min and hop on the tram. The view is stunning with the ascension of the tram. People are organized. The architecture are classic. Exhibitions change every now and then, such as impressionism, modernism and abstractism...

I like this museum not only as a museum but also as a place to spend relaxing time.
It has nice collections, garden and view. I would like to come back with my one lens camera just to take photos sometime soon.
Only one thing I didn't like about here was coffee from the cafe. That was very week and didn't taste coffee..... -

This is a must for anyone who lives in or is visiting Los Angeles. First, it's one of the most hassle-free things you can do in LA. Park in the giant parking structure, and a tram takes you to the museum. Parking is $15 but otherwise the museum is completely free.
Incredible art and stunning views. We were able to see Van Gogh's Irises on display. I'm not huge into art but it was really cool to see a lot of influential pieces. You also get one of the best views of Los Angeles you'll ever have.- Van Gogh's Irises on display at the Getty.Van Gogh's Irises on display at the Getty.

History
Established in 1997.
The Getty Center opened to the public on December 16, 1997. The mountaintop site overlooking the 405 freeway was chosen in 1982, and architect Richard Meier began work in 1984. Once construction began, the Center took nearly nine years to emerge from the hillside: 24 acres of buildings and gardens, with a million square feet of interior space and 300,000 travertine blocks imported from Italy.
Today the Center houses the Getty's collection of European art from the Middle Ages to the present as well as European and American photography. It's also home to one of the largest art libraries in the world, which houses a vast special collections ranging from Old Master prints to optical devices.
