As a consumer, I used to think Yelp! was great.  As a business owner I've come to realize that unlike Angie's List and eBay, a customer can come in and claim you're the worst restaurant or store on the planet regardless if there is any truth to it, with zero accountability.  Worse, their "algorithm" filters out real reviews and random while leaving fake ones that have zero basis in fact.  There is no arbitration as with Angie's List so if the reviewer wants to threaten your livelihood because they've had a bad day or they're really a disgruntled ex-employee, Yelp! doesn't care.

I only leave a really scathing review when I've been ripped off, lied to or treated badly and already addressed it with management.  Other consumers sometimes have no issue with flaming you for seemingly trivial matters and then not replying when you reach out and attempt to rectify.   The business has no recourse.

Yelp is the pits - do NOT give them any credibility or advertising money.  We are considering how to remove our business despite an overall positive rating, simply because it's mostly an avenue for angry people with issues to vent with no recourse for the business.

    Yelp, you suck.

Yelp's review system now utterly useless. They in no way deliver factual unbiased results. They use what they call an "algorithm" to filter the reviews of businesses. The moment they started filtering peoples reviews is the moment their system became inaccurate.

Yelp does have the opportunity to be one of the most useful companies on the Web, unfortunately due to said algorithms they are not. It's OK to filter IP abuse issues and illegal slander but when real people make real reviews about a place they love/hate you need to leave it alone.

Yelp is poised for success. I see them getting beyond what Twitter and Facebook can only dream of. The name Yelp has slightly negative connotations, like some poor animal in pain, and they might want to consider changing that name to a more positive - sounding one.
The CEO looks like a good, down to earth guy (unlike financial company CEOs). So, I might buy some Yelp stock.
Yelp Talk extends Yelp beyond the business-review circle, and allows us to talk about anything. Well, almost anything. But that's good enough for me.

    Update 4/2014:
I am reducing my rating of Yelp because someone has been deleting my Yelp Talk postings highlighting the bleak, crime-ridden status quo in Mexico. Posts were probably flagged by pro-Mexican Nationalists lurking in Yelp Talk San Diego.

This site is totally skewed and claims it is legitimate based on a completely faulty algorithm. It bumps down reviews with no rhyme or reason, and allows reviews that clearly violate their terms of use to remain in view.

If they would just remove the flawed algorithm and allow all reviews to be viewed, it would actually give a more truthful perspective of the business you are searching for.

There is a reason that Yelp only gets 2 stars on Yelp!!!  DON'T TRUST IT!

    Tip: check Google instead.

I have been a Yelp member for a number of years, and recently have experienced the business side of it. I know that many people have their fair share of opinions about it, but I think it is important to have a fair conversation about it.

Without a doubt, Yelp can be a valuable marketing tool (regardless of whether or not you spend a dime on it). In it you can find a lot of competitive intelligence information ready for you to data mine. Of course, you can't save them because all these reviews are property of Yelp, believe it or not! Also, Yelp can be a good way to get the business name out. Any new business can attest to that.

Unfortunately, Yelp can also be a deadly weapon. Have you heard the phrase, "live and die by the sword"? Their algorithm, while well intended, seems full of holes as evidenced by the plethora of business owners who complain everyday about Yelp. Regardless, it is crucial to understand that Yelp has every right to do whatever the heck it wants with its proprietary algorithm. If they wanted to block a business' listing they could and that'd be perfectly legal. The sooner you accept that, the happier you will become (because then you will focus on what's really important, and that is on improving your business right away).

I suppose the problem with Yelp's User Experience (UX) is that....... well...that is something I am not ready to share. They will have to pay me to hear what I have to say to improve their product/service. Who knows... I might make my own startup based on my insight as an end-user and compete with Yelp? Oh the irony! Maybe I am kidding, maybe I am serious... you never know.  LOL

All in all, I personally am glad Yelp exists, and it has blessed me over the years. But it did provide some insights, the most important being that being a smart consumer means knowing what to take with a grain of salt (especially coming from a Yelp rating). Yup.

Why does every other review here starts with: " This is my 100th / 200th / whatever number review and I decided to review yelp blablabla...  Who cares!!

Now that I got this out I can start reviewing Yelp.
Yelp, yelp, yelp... I love it and hate it at the same time. I like reading reviews, writing them and all that goes with it.

I hate the filter system. I know that a lot of filtered reviews are actually fake but it doesn't matter because it's so obvious! It's not fair that some of the real reviews get filtered and that the fake ones are still there. They should leave all off them there and let us be the judge! Most of the fake reviews are obvious and anyone can spot them.

When I check a place on Yelp, I check both filtered and unfiltered reviews and decide for myself who to belive. Hope that I'm not the only one doing that.

Our business has 34 reviews that were REMOVED from the review list and they have real and valid reviews from our students and parents... WHY??

because we don't PAY Yelp to do extra advertising...

    Dear Yelp,

Your name means "a short bark or cry". Unfortunately, you let people howl. You should put a much shorter word limit to the complaints you let these sad, hangry people leave. Yelp has become nothing but an outlet for the hangry and impatient, also the often misinformed.

I find that often the information is wrong on these businesses all together; hours, cash/credit, reservations/pet-friendly, etc. From what I hear, it's not easy to change online for these businesses.

You know what would be great? A negative or "thumbs-down" option for those who don't believe the reviews were "useful", "funny" or "cool". How about a "WTF" option? For people who think their review stinks?

Although I do use Yelp, I wish you did offer an option to scoff at someone's review. Sometimes people and their demands or thoughts on a menu or services (thought to be rendered) are ridiculous because they have NO idea what they are talking about. Period. Please consider. Thank you.

In case reviewer wanted updates, I want you to know that I got the citation from the yelp. If you remember from my previous post, I asked the Yelp to remove my business from their website but the Yelp declined saying it was against the law.

The yelp is citing the US Constitution as the reason why they cannot remove business from the site. More specifically, freedom of the press.
I did respond that that's not the reason why they cannot remove a business, rather a reason why they will not. If I remember correctly,  con law does not say the yelp "must" publish.

If we are for a second entertaining the idea of protecting constitutional right of the Yelp, what about my right? I still have a say whether I wanted to associate with the Yelp or not. I chose not to associate with them at all. Where is my right being protected?

Granted, it has been awhile since I took Con law courses. However, citing the US Constitution as your base to refuse removal is too... unsmart for lack of better words.

Furthermore the response does not even address the main problem with their algorithm. This is probably why Google has decided to come in picture for this type of business. At least google does not erase my positive reviews soon after I decline its advertisement offer.

Please excuse typos as I am trying to respond using phone.

Word of mouth is the most honest and effective form of advertising on the planet. Yelp leverages this "scientific law" in a business model that empowers customers, provides input to potential customers and levels the playing field for business owners, big and small.

Yelp provides so many direct and indirect benefits, I could go on and on, but to make it simple... Yelp gives your opinion value.

Have you ever had a great (or poor) experience with a business and wanted to say something but figured it didn't really matter? Well, now it does. Yelp turns every customer into a "secret shopper" where no good deed goes unrewarded. Gone are the days where great food is enough; if your cashier gives change and then grabs a handful of chips barehanded and plops it on your plate, someone's going to hear about it. Yelpers review everything from ambiance and affordability to customer service and cleanliness. As a result, businesses, along with owners and their employees, have to raise the bar. This make things better for all of us.

Do you hire better qualified employees...use higher quality ingredients, which may cost more?  Yelpers will tell people why it's worth it or maybe why the cheaper route is not. Bigger businesses may have bigger budgets but Yelp can help a small business tip the promotional balance by drawing attention to the all the advantages small business have to offer.

    The "Dark Side" of Yelp

The truth is, most of the negative articles I've investigated have been based on the stories of one or more disgruntled business owners who've received negative reviews and are now upset about how it's affecting their business. Some owners are upset by their failed attempts to manipulate the system (e.g. giving people free stuff or discounts for positive reviews, creating new Yelp accounts and giving themselves positive reviews.) The system Yelp uses to weed out certain reviews is it's "golden egg." I'm sure it's not perfect but it's in Yelp's best interest to keep it's rating system as accurate as possible, otherwise  the app is worthless.

I've also heard that Yelp increases the amount of negative reviews shown for businesses that don't purchase their advertising. I haven't seen any proof of that, but it seems unlikely since it would mean an end to Yelp. Can you imagine pissing off a bunch of Yelpers?

Finally, I've heard complaints (from owners) that when people go to see say a review for their company, Yelpers are shown paid advertisements from their competitors. I can see why an owner wouldn't like that, but that's business. If I'm paying for an advertisement, it better show up when people are searching for something that relates to my business. That's just common sense. May the highest rated product/service win! That's what Yelp is all about.

I, as many do, rely on Yelp for information regarding a myriad of businesses under the assumption that it is an unbiased site. Nothing can be further from the truth. We donate our time and efforts to this site and Yelp will continually work in the best interest of ad-paying businesses, and not the everyday casual user/consumer. They consistently deny the free speech of their faithful community with often little to no explanation.

I have had THREE first-hand experience reviews deleted by Yelp. There is no justification for this and Yelp refuses to explain the reasoning behind this. I've had a photo deleted with Yelp stating "We encourage users to post photos that are broadly representative of the business, while sharing their personal experience with that business in a review." What do you mean a photo that broadly represents a business? It's a PHOTO I took of the BUSINESS. How can you make a photo broadly represent something? It's not a f'ing painting! There's a reason Yelp itself has 2 stars, which by its own distinction is a "Meh. I've experienced better." Although there is no mainstream alternative, there is undoubtedly a better option out there for us. Jeremy Stoppelman, I'm looking at you and your $1B company. Down with Yelp.

Yelp you are an absolute disgrace to the healing of our country's economy! Small businesses depend on word of mouth and experiences from past customers and YOU are single handedly putting businesses in jeopardy because of your FILTER! Let the voices of EVERYONE be heard so that everyone can make informed decisions. Not filter out all the good ones because new Yelp users don't fit all your criteria, and leave the negative reviews from people that have not actual been customers(or are from competitors who's goal it is to drive down ratings on your site). And the only way to have more of the positive reviews show is to pay you an ungodly amount monthly?!?! REALLY??? Smells a bit Tony Soprano to me!
It's time to help consumers make informed decisions and aide in the rise of small businesses! You should be ashamed of yourselves!

Yelp really needs to reconsider how they filter reviews. It's very harmful to small business owners who have a mixed clientele between those who are internet savvy and those who are not. The internet savvy ones tend to be the first to jump to conclusions and complain while those who make a special effort to get on yelp to leave a positive review are censored due to the fact that they are not regular users.

Yelp has the potential to be a powerful tool to businesses however their solutions are far from perfect and they need to acknowledge that.

Customer Services for Yelp - FAIL

While I have used Yelp for reviewing local businesses in the past, I now find myself on the other end of it, as the business person. We recently discovered Businesses on Yelp can claim there business.  I would assume you can find the business, claim it, and follow the criteria to become accredited. Here lies the issue, our business has already been CLAIMED. So now what? Now we try to contact Yelp for assistance.

How can someone claim your business? What procedures are in place to accredit the person claiming is of the business? How does Yelp correct the issue?

Yelp has no customer service phone number listed? You can only contact Yelp via web using carefully selected topics that Yelp designates.... and the icing on the cake. Once you place your question, issue, or concern needing to be fixed Yelp thanks you for your feedback and kindly informs you that you will receive some type of correspondence within a weeks time. A WEEKS TIME.

That's not how to properly run a customer service center Yelp. Businesses in retail and consumer interaction, as you are, should know that without a properly functioning Customer Service division, the company fails the consumer.

You are failing the consumer Yelp, terribly.

Here is a suggestion for you. How about you allow the same free, limitless communications the public places on its reviews onto you. How about you operate a customer service center that not only handles complaints but does so in a timely fashion? A weeks time for someone to begin to correspond and fix and issue is in this day and age unacceptable.

Today yelp removed my legitimate review left for a Tint shop in Stockton CA. Called Cal Tint. The company was posting pictures of other shops installs as their own. I found this out ONLY after seeing a vehicle I remembered which was actually done in TAIWAN!! 90% of their online pictures were bogus. I also found the owner to be a bit of a jerk after speaking with him on the phone.

Looks like Cal Tint is NOW officially a PAID Advertiser with yelp. It is very odd (but obvious why) that my review was only removed after this company became a paid advertiser.

    Never Advertise with Yelp!!

I received telemarketing call after telemarketing call from Yelp... then one day last year one of their telemarketers hit me when I was just thinking about promoting my business and he seemed nice.

I told him I didn't have money for advertising but could maybe do $50 a month for pay for click sort of things. We talked for a while about my business, then he said the minimum amount they could do was $200 a month. I told him that I couldn't afford that unless it would lead to immediate returns. He said if I did Yelp Deals, it would fund the advertising. Then after more talking it became a minimum of $300 a month. I was about to back out, but he talked me into it, assuring it would be the key to my business. Then when we were finished talking, he sent me the contract and it was $350 a month. I should have run. I was stupid.

A couple weeks later I received a call from the salesperson again. I thought he was kindly calling to find out how things were going, but of course not. He was telling me that to make my plan actually work, they needed me to pay $550 a month. I told him that I already couldn't afford the $350 I was contractually obligated to, so no. Then he told me that I owed it to him for the amount of time he spent with me on the phone. I confirmed at that point that I was only obligated to the 12 months, and confirmed that it would end after 12 months and then hung up.

About 5 weeks in, I contacted them to see what date I needed to cancel by to end the contract and confirm the amount. It was a $1000 termination fee and I was already struggling with the $350 monthly payments! So I agreed to a pay-per-click advertising model that would cost the same (they told me less, but of course it wasn't), but that it wouldn't extend my contract, and again I confirmed that my contract would end on June 30th and it would be done, that I didn't need to cancel, it would just be done, and that if I came up with $1000 to pay them off to end the contract, I could get out of it.

Unfortunately, I never had a spare $1K upfront to pay them until it was a couple months off from the end of the contract date, so at that point it was cheaper just to pay them to the end of the contract.

So fine, I made a poor advertising decision. I gave into a shady business with shady business practices. I paid the price. But July 1st, the last payment was made and it's over! I'm done! Hallelujah!! Right?

Oh nooooo... August 1st they bill me again. So I contact my account manager. By phone. By email. Over and over. And despite the fact that Yelp tries to make it REALLY hard for you to contact them, I found a site that has a Yelp phone number. I called it. I emailed them... no response for 6 days until I finally contacted my bank, BofA, to stop future payments to them. I assumed I would have to deal with the current charge on my own, but my bank was nice enough to try contact them on my behalf, but they couldn't even get ahold of them. A company that tries this hard to not have to deal with customer service was apparently questionable enough to BofA that they decided to go ahead and contest the current charge. Now all of a sudden when the bank is contesting the charge, Yelp FINALLY calls me... and want to know what I have in writing...

Just for reference, I have not benefitted a penny from their advertising, yet paid my $4200 debt to them for my stupid decision and have shut up, not complained and lived with it. This was my poor decision. I just won't allow them to keep milking me for more.

Yelp: I confirmed with at least two representatives on the phone that when my contract ends, it ends and we are done. If you can find someway around this, you are not only complete scam artists, but your representatives lied to me on the phone. I know you won't post this review because you censor everything, but I feel good knowing that I posted it here first before I post it everywhere else on the internet.

I love reading reviews of new places and Yelp lets me experience more of my city.  I like how I can meet new people, attend events, check-in, and use coupons.  Yelp isn't without its negatives.  Sometimes the app will freeze or not allow you to check in.  Litigous businesses will try to sue and/or belittle Yelpers who posted honest reviews.  We have a freedom of speech and press--as long as the review is truful and the Yelper did visit, then the business owners shouldn't be litigous.

However, from my perspective I see business owners and Yelpers having a positive experience.  Everyone has different experiences and opinions.  I'm setting a goal to review more businesses in 2014.  Here's to Yelp!

Because I use this service so religiously, I also review religiously. Now, this has caused a few headaches where psychopath business owners are concerned, but truly, they only come out of the woodwork on rare occasions. How does Yelp get only 2.5 stars?  This is not my first review and there are many aspects of what makes a business a 'quality' business. Yelp encapsulates all of them.
I still have a MySpace account that I could use to check into a local business and see if others like it, but I forgot my password and throwaway email that is associated with it.
Then came Yelp! I admit that it took a really bad experience to get me to sign up and start reviewing. I laid stagnant for a while when I should have been mire on top of letting others know about what I thought was hot and what I thought was not.
Yelp is by far the most useful app and website I have ever used! When I am out of my hometown and I want to know where the locals go, I check Yelp. I know the people who have tread before me are being honest and even positive about their feelings.
Yelp is by far, the most helpful website that is out. After 10 years Yelp is stronger than ever!
While there are other sites that let you see your friends from high school and see daily drama, Yelp allows me to meet new friends that actually share my interests. Who doesn't like to eat and drink?
This is the best social networking site that has ever been around! I have met the coolest people both locally and from afar. I will come across a profile and then when we meet in person we have commonalities and commradere that other sites cannot provide.
Yelp is the place where I can go and do cool things.
I have been able to volunteer to represent Yelp and that was very fruitful. I have attended a few Elite events and that has been some of the most fun I have ever had. Being in a group of Yelpers is interesting as they all have valued opinions
There is no way I would be as actively social if not for Yelp!

First off, I love Yelp!  I'm a huge fan and have been part of the elite squad for several years.  I love the fact that our opinion matters and we are free to write reviews about restaurants, food & drink and local business as well as search out the hot spots in US and other countries.
What I don't like is the fact that a business owner can contact Yelp and have a reviewed pulled if it's not favorable.  I recently experienced this and feel that someone from Yelp should contact the reviewer before a review is pulled... and maybe verify things...
Below is what I received from Yelp HQ this evening about pulling my review.  They stated that my review "lacked firsthand customer experience".  I encourage all of you at Yelp & Yelp HQ read the email that was provided me and let me know how it lacked firsthand customer experience.  I would also like to request to speak with Clarence from Yelp support so I can find out how my review wasn't first hand.

Here is the email I received.

We wanted to let you know that we've removed your review of Dave's Auto Center. Our Support team has determined that it falls outside our Content Guidelines (yelp.com/guidelines) because it lacks a firsthand customer experience at this location.

We hope you will continue to participate on Yelp, while keeping in mind our Content Guidelines.

    Removed Content:
Not sure why my previous post was removed, but I really don't care. Bottom line.... The worst auto repair shop in the state, bar none. The diagnosis was wrong not once, not twice, but three times. After I dropped 2K in repairs and drove the truck off the lot about three blocks later the problem was still there. I made the shop put everything back the way it was, took the truck to a dealer and forty-five minutes later the master relay switch replaced and the truck was running fine. This place is a joke.  Save yourself some time and frustration and avoid this place like the plague.

    Regards,
    Clarence

Should your business pay Yelp?...Yelp didn't mention the $630 contract cancellation policy for my small business when the salesperson signed me up. In addition, I sent an email to cancel the contract, but the account rep waited until after the next billing cycle to reply! They sure were on the ball to stay in contact with me until I wanted to cancel. They filter 90% of my business reviews and inflate the traffic numbers they claim to drive to my site. When actually my campaign drove many people to the yelp sight
    Very disappointed.

I'd really love to know how to contact Yelp. I have been looking for the past 30 minutes and cannot find one link or number. I'm not a business owner so I'm not having to inquire about a business page. I am a regular ol' Yelper who wants to find out why Yelp is sending "invitations" on my behalf to have people join.I've never once sent an invite to anyone. I want this to stop and I don't want them being sent out under my name anymore. But of course I can't find any way to let Yelp know this.
