Fantastic. Thoughtful and thought-provoking rotating exhibits.  You could spend a couple of hours or an entire day wandering around.  The cafeteria-style restaurant near to the east side of the building (side with the tar pits) serves good pizza (that I recall from a couple of years ago).  There are constantly 3-5 food trucks across the street on Wilshire, too. The lamp posts in the front of LACMA make for really cute photo sessions.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is an art museum located on Wilshire Boulevard in the Miracle Mile vicinity of Los Angeles. curator of modern art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, introduced the Art and Technology (A&T) program. Within the program, artists like Robert Irwin and James Turrell were placed, for example, at the Garrett Corporation, to conduct research into perception.

The Matchstick Man in the African/Egyptian Gallery is a must see. Museums are great.  Especially ones that offer free memberships to children (under 18). There's also a painting room for kids to express themselves artistically.  It's also free to Los Angeles county residents from 3-5pm. Fun and free. I LOOOOVE museums.

Finally got to get to visit LACMA. The boyfriend and I arrived at 3pm on a fun Friday night after we got our business taken care of...which means we were eating. After we ate at Canyon City BBQ, we drove ourselves to LACMA. Now...Since I've been to the Guggenheim and MOMA in NYC, the stuff here is limited. But this is the best LA can offer. I do like their cafe though...but it's meh...okay. I'm happy to have finally seen the URBAN LIGHTS! The bf is too sweet to plan this out for me...since i'm such a complainer.

Bottom line at the top: woo lacma for culturing Angelenos!!
    --
Lacma has got something got everyone. The light posts if you're a trendy blogger, tourist, etc., ever changing exhibits for the art fiends and hipsters, tar pits for kids/people with dogs/bored elders etc., college nights for bruins and Trojans, you name it!

Museum admission is super reasonable and the mid city location is perfect. Woo hoo!

A large museum covering a wide range of art from many different regions of the world.

Parking is free on Sunday if you do it on the designated streets, but it's a hassle to say the least if you don't get there early. There are ticket discounts for students, seniors and children (check website for details).

The museum has many great pieces, including paintings and sculptures. Some of these pieces are from well-renowned artists like Picasso, some from lesser known artists. There is ancient art and modern art. Like I said, a wide range which makes for a great visit.

In my opinion, the best area to visit is the one dedicated to Japanese art. It's beautiful and it's themed. What I think would make this museum especially great is if all the areas were more themed, not just this one.

I've never been to the theatre, but it'd like to check it out sometime.

This place has multiple cafes, for those who need a little break and a light snack and drink.

If you love art, or even if you don't, I recommend coming to the LACMA to explore beautiful works of art and learn a thing or two you never knew about some artists and their craft.

This museum is huge and hosts many traveling and permanent exhibits.  The curators work hard to bring many amazing and wonderfully different exhibits such as Tim Burton, Stanley Kubrick and the levitated mass to display here.  Stuff that you would normally not be able to see anywhere else.  I was there for the Tim Burton exhibit and that was the most impressive collection that I have ever seen.

There's plenty of parking across the street for $10.

The very best museum in Los Angeles!! It may not offer the 360 degree views of the city like the Getty, but it's conveniently located on Wilshire Boulevard. They've got an amazing and comprehensive collection and six buildings filled with art from all around the world - everything from to Rembrandt to Picasso to Hockney. Because it's sunny Los Angeles, there is art on display outdoors as well. I would definitely check out Turrell's Breathing Light while it is still on view.

Parking is only $10 all day and they offer free general admission during the week after 3 pm for LA County residents (although the best deal is to become a member!) There are a couple of places to eat on the campus, but you can usually find food trucks lined up across the street and there are a handful of restaurants nearby. Plus it's located walking distance from the Grove.

Such a fan.  The LACMA is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon with friends, or even solo.  The other half and I usually start with a nibble and a drink at the Stark Bar (go check it out) before heading to check out exhibits.  If you go more than once a year, I highly recommend becoming a member.  The other half and I got a dual membership for $110 bucks.  This makes admissions free for the year, and you get a lot of other perks (30% discount for friends, etc.).  The staff is friendly and there are guided tours of almost all of the exhibits every hour.  Grab the map when you walk in to make sure you hit everything you want to see (the LACMA is BIG).  One of my favorite places in LA.

I AM STILL SO ENTHRALLED ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE HERE. I mean seeing the Urban Lights (which by the way are FREE to take pictures of) before coming in was already an exciting beginning but when you come inside, oh my goodness be prepared to be taken in away. This place is a must come if you're in LA and if you live in LA....YOU LUCKY BUTTS. Ya'll get to come for free after 3pm from Monday to Friday but the museum is closed at 5pm so I guess you'll have to come back. If you're a student, bring your student ID and get $5 off. YEE. One of the tips is to always check the website before you make a visit here because there'll be Special Exhibit they have that you can think about investing more time to come in and explore. Also, it is a really children-friendly area and you can make the most out of it if you check the schedule for family time and get your kids more involved in the arts. Speaking of arts, you don't have to have vast knowledge to be sucked in because on the walls there is really good background information on the style and the spirit of certain genre and era of art. Keep an open mind and get ready to get analytical and soulful to connect to the pieces. Honestly, some of them are just left me speechless because the artworks really come alive when you look at them in person.

Also, if you're not sure about the picture taking policy, just ask! The people working there are older and look serious but most of them are really nice unless you don't ask and just assume and do something wrong. Lol. But the key is, if you're in the exhibit like the Korean collection of Joseon period where it's more display of cultural things, no pictures allowed!

Art is a different experience for everyone so come and make it your own unique adventure. You don't have to love everything displayed because maybe it's not in your interest or something you're knowledgable about but in the end you'll learn a lot. HAVE A GOOD TIME.

Great date place, or just a good touristy spot to check out!

I brought my parents here to have a nice family outing and its amazing living in LA we can pass on, on so many amazing FREE events!

Recently my guy and I came here to kill some time, we got to LACMA at 7pm, so right across the street you can get free parking (after 7) make sense because LACMA closes at 8pm.
We went on Jazz and Wine night so there were amazing music playing with dozens of people    set up tiny picnics at every crevice of the main area of LACMA! It was just such so fun to see people dancing and just enjoying themselves!

Lacma is so big, there are certain part of the museum where you will have to pay. Honestly i never pay for any of those i just continue walking around and its big enough to keep yourself entertained!

First time, it was the Tim Burton exhibit, and most recently, for the James Turrell Retrospective exhibit.  Both times, I've enjoyed the exhibits tremendously and learned a great deal about each artists.  It's definitely nice to get such a wide variety of exhibits and LACMA does a pretty good job in laying it out.

Also I like how LACMA have special appointed times for the exhibits to limit the crowd at any give time.  Some people like to walk around LACMA since there are some freebies but tickets for any special exhibit allows you to visit any of their other exhibits.  There was a small Henri Matisse exhibit that I didn't know about and people were being turned away unless you had a ticket, so there are plenty of little surprises like that through out LACMA.

Plenty of employees around if you have any questions.

If you park at the parking lot across the street, be sure to pay for the at ticketing.  It is pricey though at $10.

Oh, an iced latte at C+M is a must for me too!

I love LACMA....they have great traveling exhibits. They just had Van Gogh.
They also have a lot of Picasso's and I also saw Matisse and Andy Warhol. I think those are on the permanent exhibit in the Ahmanson gallery.

They have an assortment of art from classic to modern and from all over the globe. Also make sure to take your picture at the light posts in the front of the museum.

Last time I went my friends ate at the food trucks parked across the street and really enjoyed it. I, however, can't vouch for them because I didn't eat there. But the food looked good and it wasn't too expensive.

You could really spend all day here. It's a pretty big place. It's connected to the La Brea Tar Pits and The Petersen Automotive Museum is close by as well. This is definitely a must-see-LA spot.

Discounted tickets for students and also free for residents (on a particular day of the month...check website for details).

LACMA has a great collection and their revolving / special exhibits are great. Definitely one of the top museums in Los Angeles. However, the schedule is weird - why you close on Wednesdays?? Also... $20 entry??? That's kind of outrageous. It's usually $5 more to enter the special exhibits as well, and when you add parking (another $12) it gets pricy. They try to save themselves by saying it's free after 3 pm some days, but you really only have until 5pm and you can't cover this museum in 2 hours so that's kind of pointless / waste of gas and parking money, not to mention having to deal with rush hour traffic if you stay until closing. They did have food trucks lined up across the street last time I went but they were mostly for the businesses across the street so I'm not sure how often that's there. I pretty much only come here when there's something special going on - in my opinion that's really the only times you get your money's worth.

Just went to see the Stanley Kubrick exhibit.  They did a great job laying everything out.  There was a section for each of his movies that featured objects, photographs and even letters relating to that movie.  You get to realize what an interesting storyteller his was.

In a parallel exhibit, the works of Caravaggio and artists he influenced were on display.  The accompanying audio tour is definitely worth the 6 bucks, because you learn so much more about the background and the history of some key paintings.  I learned that he was the originator of a certain style that became prominent.  A definitely must-see.

The Stanley Kubrick exhibit they have here (until 6/30/13) is nothing short of excellent. Anyone who is a fan of the late director's work will be in awe of all the rare props, shooting scripts, miniatures, replicas, original costumes, rare film footage, interviews, ephemera, and countless other treasures related to his seminal works that are on display.

It's only $20 to get in, and that includes admission to the museum proper. I just spent all my time in here, though. Oddly enough, they don't allow ins and outs on the same day, even if you've got a ticket to prove you paid. Pretty weird and weak if you ask me. Don't assume every patron is a scoundrel looking to sell his ticket for half price to the non-existent crowds out front begging to get in on the cheap. They should know that the vast majority of Kubrick fans have no problem parting with $20 to see this stuff.

Park across the street from the main entrance off Wilshire. They tow if you're parked on Wilshire from 4-7pm on weekdays, and as I witnessed they are extremely efficient at loading up every single remaining car. If there was a small window decal at the ticket booth warning customers, I would have been towed.

LACMA is a really cool museum. There's so much to look at from all art work to the architecture and landscape this place is just really nice. One complaint I have though is that it is seems like exhibits all have different rules some allow cameras others don't and sometimes the workers here aren't very nice when telling people the rules of the exhibit.

Great place to bring family, friends, a date or yourself. LACMA is hands down one of my favorite art museums to visit in LA. With different wings and exhibits, there is something for all to enjoy. I always find myself back here when a new exhibit is opening up. I recently visited the Kubrick exhibit which was just phenomenal, and last year visited the Tim Burton exhibit. LACMA definitely keeps me on my toes in terms of what they provide for all to view and enjoy.

Recently installed - Levitated Mass is really grand! I don't know how to fully describe this place without writing a novel - it's a place you just have to visit for yourself.

Parking is located for around $10 across the street, but I usually park in the residential neighborhoods a few blocks back. Another perk is Wilshire is sometimes lined with foodtrucks in case you get hungry post or pre museum visit.

Tickets/Memberships are reasonably priced. Once in a great while there will be corprorate/free nights/etc, so keep checking their website.

    Summary

-Big, and they have shifting exhibits. So coming one year doesn't mean you've seen it all for the next.
-Fancy. I like that fancy stuff. Presentation is everything.

    Details:

Prequisite: You have to like this sort of thing to begin with.

I like coming to places that are built for leisurely exploration. Your experience at art museum is really dependent upon how constrained you are by time and those around you; if you happen to have someone with perfectly in sync pacing with yours or you really love discussing or pointing out cool things to others then this is your kind of place.

Some exhibits stay the same, some change over time. I've visited the Japanese Netsuke section multiple times and had frequented this place more often back when I was an art major (good times...).

Recently they had this kinetic city thing and a Japanese painting thing that was just awesome.

If you have kids this place is super legit all you brave parental units.

I recommend if you have an appreciation for the art of looking at stuff.

    Cheers peoples,

Let's be real. I only came here for the lights.

I first saw the lights in No Strings Attached with Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher, but never paid much attention to it because I didn't think it was real. Years later, I stumbled upon pictures of these same lights on Instagram and Facebook and learned that it is in fact real and is located in LA. Soon enough, me and my sister plan a road trip down to LA to hit this place up.

Clearly, it's best to come here at night to get the full effect. It's definitely a sight for sore eyes. It's also a popular spot for photo shoots. During my visit, there were many photographers out taking pictures of family, friends, lovers, etc. It's one of those feel-good places to get lost among all the lights. Take it all in and let your thoughts flow freely!

Major word of advice, don't climb up on the poles. They have security on bikes patrolling the lights. I wanted a nice photo at a higher angle but security rolled up and said, "HEY SPIDER-MAN, get off the pole!" If you're using an iPhone camera, you can actually change the lighting by tapping the camera screen to change the focus. It'll toggle with the amount of light that the lens takes in. Keep messing around with it until you get it to your desired settings. You won't have that professional finish, but it'll suffice with filtering. Tips from the almighty Felix L.: (1) street parking is hard to find around the area, and (2) it's best to go around dinner time (or even late night) where there will be less people so you can take cute photos without having someone ruin the background.

I wish I knew which poles Natalie and Ashton touched so I could rub my body all over it. LACMA is definitely one of those places on a list to visit before you die. It's hard to be a bright light in a dim world, but LACMA will surely bring out the light in you. Get inspired here and shine bright like a diamond!

With my bro. I swore I've written a review for LACMA before... guess I was wrong. I very much enjoy this museum. It's a very big and has many different periods of art. I was disappointed for missing the Kubrick exhibition when that came around. Anyway, went yesterday with my brother since he needed some research for class. I loved the De Stijl period since it was so minimalist and straightforward. Didn't take any of the obligatory lamp post pics or the yellow noodly things but I got some pics being artsy fartsy. We got there pretty late on Saturday, seeing at they were closing at 7pm; we arrived at 5ish. Everyone should visit if they get a chance; immerse yo self in some art and culture.

As LACMA continues to expand, it now feels like 1 day might not be enough time for a proper visit. We spent most of the day there and visited most of the buildings but ran out of time before making it to the Pavilion for Japanese Art. The art experience starts before you enter LACMA with various outdoor installations including Urban Light and Levitated Mass (the giant granite boulder perched over a slot). It's also worth walking by the La Brea Tar Pits.

LACMA excels in providing multimedia experiences - including thought provoking outdoor art placed in indoor spaces (e.g., a wavy gigantic piece by Richard Serra), the use of music and videos, etc. Current exhibits include German expressionist cinema (complete with showings of Metropolis and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari), Robert Mapplethorpe, and Surrealism.

The Stanley Kubrick exhibit had information, including props, scripts, shooting schedules and more from all of his motion pictures, including aborted projects. His cameras and chairs were also on display. It was fascinating to read his handwritten notes and see the actual typewriter from the Shining. The exhibit runs till June 30 and is a must for Kubrick fans. Download the free Kubrick app. LACMA has a general museum app (keyword LACMA) for iPhone and Android.

LACMA West is currently being renovated and will be the home for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences museum. If the Kubrick exhibit is any indication of what's to come, it should be well worth visiting.

General admission is $15. Special exhibits like Stanley Kubrick cost extra. Pick up the today at LACMA guide for information about exhibitions and free talks and tours. If you're lucky, you may be able to find free two hour street parking in the neighborhood but it isn't easy to find. Food trucks park across the street on Wilshire and the museum café, Coffee + Milk, offers excellent espresso drinks made with Intelligentsia beans.

Where have I been all this time? I didn't not realize this gem of a place in all the years living in Southern CA. Yes you have to pay for parking and admission, but I think this best bang for your buck because we spent about 7 hours leisurely walking through the exhibits and still didn't get a chance to see everything. We went early on a Sunday so, it was not crowded at all. I was able to stand and read the description of the art work without having to rush because people were crowding around me. I would definitely be back for sure.

Great museum... huge complex! Went to see the Calder exhibit and the Tar Pits and found both fascinating. The sad part though is the center court Café (if one can call it that) to the left of the Ticketing. Very disappointing. It's hard to believe this is a real bar/café in a major museum in LA. Messy tables with piles of dirty plates and glassware, chairs & tables in disarray, a lack of competent service and attention, and too many staff by the counter chatting away with each other... oblivious to their seated customers or potential customers. And this was mid-day. Now I realize why it wasn't that busy. People obviously don't go back. People.... get your act together. The café/bar experience should be a wonderful part of anyone's visit to a grand museum, especially this one. Another missed opportunity.

Came back for a second round because the first wasn't enough! MASSIVE MUSEUM. I parked across the street for $10 south of Spaulding and Wilshire, but if metered parking is your thing, by all means. You can also park free in the neighborhood like I did my first time because I was broke but READ THE POSTED SIGNS. They do come around with a tow truck every hour or two.

After watching the trailer for Metropolis II I had to go see the actual model done by Chris Burden at LACMA. Basically the artist captured bustling city life and the noise of running cars, frustration in traffic, and even other details such as trains stopping and going from their stations. It truly was an amazing experience to watch a mini city have all that kinetic energy. Check the site for the times they keep the cars running, I saw it on a Friday from 1:30 to 2:30pm I believe. Also be mindful of the guards THEY DO NOT ALLOW FILMING, ONLY PHOTOS. I filmed anyway but it was really hard. I promise not to sell it, I just wanted to show my Instagram peeps how cool it was!

I also had tickets to see James Turrell's Dark Matters for the second time. Never ceases to amaze how using light and perspective can be a form of art. His light in a dark room could mean hope for a dark time. Seriously, its just a light in a dark room, but then it is so much more than that. Brilliant.

You then come across Religious art, Egyptian, Asian, Early American, Contemporary, a Campbell's Tomato Soup can, the Urban Lights also by Chris Burden, the Levitated Mass (big rock in the back by the palm trees, hard to miss) oh and you can't forget the demented Pablo Picasso. Yup, for the life of me I will never understand why he does his eyeballs crooked and such. Maybe it was his fetish.

I love coming to LACMA. Over the years, I have seen some pretty great exhibits: Dali, Tim Burton, and most recently Stanley Kubrick. Their permanent collection is really good too. I suggest coming early because you can easily spend several hours walking around and enjoying art.

Also, that massive rock is located here. It's the perfect photo op for people that want to look like they are holding up a huge rock.

There is garage, valet, and street parking. I normally will park 2 blocks away in the residential area and walk over.

    Tickets tend to be $20+.
