Very enjoyable way to spend an afternoon in West Los Angeles. Cap it off with a relaxing glass of wine and some chips in the bar - watch the world go by and enjoy LA's climate away from the hustle and bustle.

Iconic museum in the heart of LA

// ADMISSION // Free to LA residents after 5 pm during the week

// PARKING // I always park at a meter which are usually free after 6-8 pm. The LACMA parking lot is $10 and not worth it if you can snag street parking

    // EXHIBITS //
+ LEVITATING MASS: Yes, its a giant rock, but its so cool to walk under it
+ Free Jazz on Friday nights (bring munchies and picnic out on the lawn!)
+ Japanese Art Museum: Start on the 3rd floor and work your way down, its so pretty
+ Urban lights: The pretty street lights that everyone loves to take photos in front of. Beautiful both during the day and at night when all the lights are on.

You can also walk through the La Brea Tar Pits area which is right next door to LACMA

If you're stopping by LA, make sure not to miss LACMA! They have exquisite exhibits namely Turrell and Calder when I went, but they're so amazing and interesting year round. The Ahmanson building has wonderful art, but the modern art floor
was definitely my favorite. They have multiple free events and tours throughout the day which are all great! They have activities for all ages including the youngest children. Definitely the best art museum I've been to thus far. Make sure to check it out

The "Urban Light" itself is already worth coming to check this place out! It's outside so anybody can see it without paying admission.

    Urban Light: yelp.com/biz_photos/los-…

The first time when I saw Urban Light, I was absolutely amazed! Who knew putting a bunch of lamp posts together in a rectangle would make it a piece of art? Somehow someone did. I have yet to come here at night, but I can only imagine it must be 1000x prettier.

Normally, the admission for $15 for adult, $10 for seniors and students and FREE for under 18. Instead, I waited until the second Tuesday of the month to come check it since it's FREE general admission day.

Inside LACMA, there is a collection of art from all the major civilization throughout history. You can easily spend over 4 hours here appreciating all the arts in this place. I was particularly impressed by the numbers of Picasso's paintings located here.

Remember to take the elevator at the Broad Contemporary Art Museum. It is by far the largest and coolest elevator I have ever ridden in.

For parking, it's $10 at the parking garage. But I would recommend park on Spaulding Ave for metered street parking. It's much cheaper!

Great exhibits and collections, and you'll definitely have a great time wandering around the grounds and various buildings. They do charge a bit more than other museums in LA, but it's worth it.

LACMA is one of my favorite museums.  You don't even have to be inside to enjoy the vibe of the place.  There's plenty of street parking outside, but if you don't want to bother with that, there's paid parking in the parking structure.

There's always different exhibits or showcases going on too, so things here are always fresh.  There's plenty of things to enjoy outside of the museum as well as inside, so you could easily spend hours here.  They have some outdoors exhibits that are free, and free Jazz concerts on Fridays.  Most exhibits allow picture taking too.  Even if you're not a big art person, there's something here for everyone.  I don't see how anybody can not love this place.

I just love this museum. I've been a member for years and I my kids grew up coming here. It's easily accessible either by public transit (our preferred means of travel) or by car. It's incredibly kid-friendly and the exhibits are - in a word - remarkable.

I grew up a globetrotter and have been to all sorts of museums, including the Louvre. While this is not the Louvre, I'm in debt to this museum because it's the place my kids grew up going to and learning to appreciate art and creativity; where they learned the difference between pop art, renaissance, dada and ancient art, among other things. It has enriched their world in ways the public schools are no longer able to.

It's affordable. This cannot be understated. As a single mom on a budget, this is critical. Plus, it gives me my art fix when I need it.

I love this museum simply for its variety of art--from classic Romantic paintings to modern sculptures, there's a good mix of everything for everyone. I personally love wandering around the Monet sections and the French decorative art galleries. I love letting my imagination run free to ponder how Marie Antoinette would've lived back in her day.

    The perks:
+ $10 student admission (pretty much a good steal!)
+ Fun photo op places, like the Urban Lights and Levitated Mass outside
+ Multiple floors of art (bring your walking shoes!)
+ Interactive exhibits and workshops, like watching a sculpting class right outside and fun activities for children
+ Ample seating in cafe area outside so you can grab food there or bring your own picnic
+ Easily accessible via public transportation from UCLA campus

    Please note:
    - You should set aside at least half a day for this if you truly want to immerse yourself in everything
    - Summer visiting = HEAT! So if you want to take pictures outside with the Urban Lights or the Levitated Mass, best do it earlier in the morning or around evening time. Plan around for the best lighting too.

With the changing feature exhibits (that are usually included w/ the general admission price), I would definitely visit again when I'm in town.

And it's also a short walk from The Grove / Farmer's Market, so you could technically spend a whole day in this area.

Any art lover visiting Los Angeles should visit the LACMA.  I was not aware of how extensive LACMA's collections were when by daughter and son-in-law took me there during a recent vacation.

I truly enjoyed my visit, as it gave me the opportunity to view works by Picasso, Pollack and contemporaries I had never seen.  You can view photographs and books all day long, but until you've seen a piece in scale and with the depth of technique, you just can't get it.  But LACMA's collections offer much, much more, including a fairly comprehensive learning experience if you simply read the display signs that summarize a significant amount of art history.

LACMA gave me that and much more.  I'm definitely going again next time in L.A.

One quick note, LACMA reaches out to the community with free admission on the following schedules:

    Second Tuesdays
On the second Tuesday of each month, general admission to the galleries and non-ticketed exhibitions is free to all.

LA County Residents After 3 pm
After 3 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, general admission is free to Los Angeles County residents with proof of residency.

    Target Free Holiday Mondays
Target sponsors several free-admission days throughout the year at LACMA on federal holidays. They feature special programming and free general admission to the permanent galleries and non-ticketed exhibitions.

No excuses for missing it when it's free!

I don't know how I haven't reviewed LACMA before.  I have been here many times over the years, and this is one of the only places that always seems to deliver for me every time.

There is always something that speaks to me at LACMA.  I may not be into the abstract or surrealism exhibit on this trip, but I know that I can always escape to the solace and simplicity of the Japanese Pavilion for the subtleties of haiku and masterful Kanji.

Or I can grab a cup of coffee and wander the grounds, catching the famous tar pits, or maybe catching a glimpse of Levitating Mass.

Or I can check out one of their special exhibits, which happened to be the Caravaggio and Kubrick on my last trip.

Regardless of how I'm feeling, or what I'm into- I always find something to be a source of inspiration.  And with the addition of food trucks that seem to always be hanging out nearby, I was able to spend the better part of a day engrossed in art.

If you haven't been, treat yourself and get cultured, you philistine.

Not really a museum-lover, but I absolutely love this place!  There is so much to see, that no matter how much of a downer you are, you will be pleased (or at least slightly entertained)!  I suggest setting aside at least 3 hours to really get to see everything you want.

Great date spot!  If you take someone on a date here and they don't have a good time, there's no use in getting in any deeper with them because they'll probably hate anywhere and everywhere you go together...including Disneyland.

Many of the outdoor parts of the museum don't require an admission fee; thus, you can spend a good hour or so enjoying the the beauty of the exterior of the museum for free (gorgeous grassy areas, artwork, sculptures, Urban Light display, etc.) and take hundreds of pictures!

    Plenty of street parking!

Whether you are happily married or a loner, whatever, you will have a good time.  There's no reason not to visit.  So, go!

I finally made it over to LACMA and better yet it was FREE ADMISSION DAY! (every second Tuesday of the month!)

I was quite impressed with this Museum, it had far more collections than I ever imagined it could have had. Of course if you're like me you always drive by the iconic lamp posts that are standing outside, but you've never made it inside LACMA lol... Anyway I finally did and inside they have everything you could ever want: sculptures, impressionist art, contemporary art, the masters, unknown artists, you name it they have it. Personally I'm not really into the modern art scene (I really just don't get it), but hey if that's your thing then have at it, they have a big section dedicated to it on the second floor of one on the main buildings. If that's not your thing, no worries!! You'll find something here for sure. I spent 3 hours here and didn't get to see everything so I need to come back to explore some more.

My favorite exhibit was definitely the Pavilion for Japanese art. It's located right near the Bing Theatre kind of off on its own but you definitely need to come check this out. When I visited they were displaying the famous Japanese prints of Hokusai (Great Wave off of Kanagawa) and it was really cool to see this up close!! They had a bunch of other great prints, porcelain, scrolls, sculptures, decorated paper screens and this AWESOME side room dedicated to netsuke (clips used on kimono). I'm kind of an Asia-nerd so this part was definitely the best.

I also enjoyed the Islamic art section (you don't see that very often) and the paintings done by some of the masters: Renoir, Matisse, Rembrandt, Cezanne.... This type of art is what I ADORE =D Thank you so much LACMA!! This museum is truly a gem of LA.

So I finally made it to LACMA...been living in LA for 5 years now and I am finally getting cultured!

This place is fabulous! Something for everyone. I was excited about checking out the Stanley Kubrick exhibit. I'm not much a movie buff, but he is an absolute genius and I was amazed with all the personal affects they had on him.

I think my favorite building and exhibit was the Pavilion for Japanese Art. The architecture of this building was impressive and so fitting for the artwork being displayed.

I got lucky and ended up going on a day where they were having a Jazz music concert. This place got packed quick! People enjoying their picnics, sitting on park benches or at the bar and cafe areas. It was a blast!

Take a friend, a date, the family...you can't go wrong. There is an exhibit for everyone here!

I love cruising west on Wilshire Blvd. As I approach the Miracle Mile, I often slow down and try to catch a glimpse of Urban Light. Sculptured by Chris Burden in 2008, it's a collection of 202 restored street lamps from the 1920's and 1930's. They're about 20 to 30 feet tall, painted in grey, and tower like a forest of trees. It looks magnificent at night, as the solar powered lights are turned on at dusk. I consider this piece of fine art to the be the trademark of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Visiting museums as an adult is way more stimulating than when you were a kid. I appreciate the art to a higher regard and can actually envision what the artist is trying to convey. Since, I don't frequent museums too often, getting a chance to visit one as spectacular as LACMA, is a real treat for me.

LACMA is open everyday except Wednesdays, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. On Fridays they're open till 8PM, weekends 7PM, and the rest of the week till 5PM. General admission is $15, museum members and under 18 are FREE, and seniors/students for $10. The real treat for you are the 2nd Tuesdays of each month and Federal Holidays, which those days are FREE. Admission for LA County residents after 3PM on the weekdays are also FREE.

There are also exhibitions (current one being the Stanley Kubrick till 6/30/13) which requires a special, timed ticket for $20 on general admission and FREE for under 18. Your ticket will also allow entry into all the other LACMA galleries and exhibitions. With public and private tours, a FREE mobile app, Wi-Fi access, programs/learning material for children, stores, cafe, and a bar, there's always something to do or see. I take pictures like a madman when I'm there. Just taking my sweet ass time looking around and trying to understand the art, going on breaks to Stark Bar, or grabbing a quick bite at Ray's.

Their collection consists of over 100,000 pieces, all of which have their own individual history and story. The masterpieces being:

La Trahison des images (Ceci n'est pas une pipe) by Rene Magritte - Ahmanson Building, Level 2.
Flower Day (Dia de Flores) by Diego Rivera - Art of the Americas Building, Level 4.
Wrestlers by Thomas Eakins - Art of the Americas, Level 3.
Shiva as Lord of the Dance from India, Tamil Nadu - Ahmanson Building, Level 4.
Tile with Scrolling Floral Arabesque from Greater Iran - Ahmanson Building, Level 4.
Weeping Woman with Handkerchief by Pablo Picasso - Ahmanson Building, Level 2.

To check out a clear view of the Hollywood sign, go to the Top of BCAM. To draw, paint, and take an art class, visit the Boone's Children's Gallery (don't be fooled by the name). See multi-dimensions of reflected light at the Pavilion for Japanese Art.

Trust me as a fellow Yelper and view the list of events on their website (lacma.org) to plan a fantastic trip or date. Everyone deserves a Night at the Museum.

This museum's great because it incorporates a lot of their outdoor space as art installations as well.

Recently went to check out the Levitated Mass, to which it was impress but not as big as I thought it would be. I expected ginormous!! But it's a boulder. Not levitated at all, if you're wondering --it's not floating. It's secured by some steel and a tunnel where you can walk under. Pretty interesting I guess. Wish they had a little write up about it though, I would've like to know where the rock was from.

They have other great things, the Lamps installation, some spaghetti looking thing for the kids, and not to mention the La Brea Tar Pits right next door.

    Great outdoor activity or date!

This is a pretty impressive museum.  They have a diverse collection; a little for everyone.  The campus is quite large and the exhibits are spread through numerous buildings.  It is not a place that can be with a quick trip.

There were a lot of exhibits that were closed while we were there.  Either the rooms were locked/roped off or you would just walk in to a big empty room.

LACMA has such a variety of amazing things. I went to the free Friday night jazz concerts last night.
It takes place in the courtyard, and they had plenty of seats and tables set up.

We managed to get a spot on the grass, and we brought our picnic blankets, food and wine.
The jazz band that played was amazing. And there were so many people there ! The place was packed ! And everyone was having a good time !

The best thing is that you can bring your own wine to the concert. They also sell wine and food there too. But it is so fun to make a picnic out of it.

The LACMA jazz concerts are definitely a summertime tradition.

We went to James Turrell's new exhibit at LACMA during the Memorial weekend. It was our 2nd visit to LACMA,  as we are new members.  Our first visit was for the Stanley Kubrick exhibit (which was also fascinating and educational).

Without knowing anything about James Turrell,  we had made an appointment for the previewing of the exhibit.  I was delightfully impressed with his biography and artistic vision,  as he appreciates light and space as an essential at form.

LACMA also showcases Picasso & Van Gogh paintings in one of their many buildings, Japanese art, ancient wood sculptures, museum gift shop, coffee shop, and a great gourmet upscale Ray restaurant with delicious pizzas. There is much to view, sit, relax, and enjoy!

I am glad we became recent members! 2 exhibit tickets cost $40. TIP: Ticket prices for exhibits are inclusive with LACMA membership, so it can be worthwhile to join. Structure parking is $10, but you can also find meter or free street parking next to Park LaBrea complex. Look at posted signs carefully.

Been a member of LACMA for a few years now and figured if I'm going to review a museum, it may as well get 5 stars simply for its existence. But in all fairness, LACMA is an exceptional museum with beautiful galleries in every one of their buildings. Been coming here regularly since I was a kid and as I got older, I realized I could visit my favorite galleries 20+ times and still never tire of them. That's the charm of this place. It's an incredibly well managed museum and all of the work contained within is enlivening. And the special exhibits never fail to inspire and have me coming back at least once more to relive the experience. Take the recent Kubrick and Caravaggio exhibits - absolutely enthralling! I was on a creative high for days. I love that feeling.

I can't choose a favorite gallery as there are far too many, but the ones I frequent most are the European painting and sculptures on level 3 and the Islamic art on level 4 of the Ahmanson Building. This building houses most of the major works of art from the antiquity to modern eras. But see, you then have other buildings on campus like the Hammer Building and the Pavilion for Japanese Art that are equally amazing. Then there are the additional charms like their restaurant, bar and café for when you work up an appetite after all that gorgeous art. If you do a day at the museum, I suggest lunch at the LACMA Café (make sure you sit outside so you can enjoy the view) and then a tour of as many of the galleries as you're willing to see. If you're doing an evening at the museum, consider a bite at Ray's or a drink at Stark Bar and rather than squeezing in all that art, consider a slower pace through the galleries. If you've got a friend who's on the same page, the evenings are the perfect time to waltz through the galleries to discuss your favorite pieces. My brother and I do this all the time and I can't tell you how great it is! Of course, we're a bit hokey and artsy so it's always a treat for us whenever we get the chance.

Don't forget that LACMA is free to all (general admission only) on the second Tuesday of each month and that they're closed on Wednesdays. For the special exhibits, you can reserve your tickets online or just give them a call. The bigger exhibits are crowded throughout the day so you should plan ahead. Other than that, be inspired and appreciate what you see! Power to the arts!

This Stanley Kubrick exhibit is awesome. Even if you're not a fan of the man's work, you'll definitely appreciate all of the cool props and the creative processes that went into each of the films being showcased.

Not sure what movies he directed? That's okay; you enter through a small theater that has clips of his work on a loop. It's like getting a Reader's Digest introduction to the works of Stanely Kubrick in a ten minute time-frame. It's worth staying and watching, because a lot of the props that you'll see in the actual exhibit are featured in there. Makes what you're about to see make more sense, especially if you've never seen the movies.

My favorite part of the exhibit was the area dedicated to The Shining. Not only did they have the actual typewriter that Jack Nicholson was banging away on in the movie, they had the original axes used to smash the door and the costumes of those creepy twin girls donned before filling the hallways with blood. Covering some of the walls was the original movie script with handwritten directors notes as well as input from the author, Stephen King.

Though I've seen the movie at least a hundred times, it was interesting to see how certain shots were filmed, the scale of the tree maze and how they replicated all of the snow in those end shots.

I also enjoyed seeing all of the budgets for some of his earlier films and how much actors were paid at that time. I also liked being able to see the letters from the studios and censorship agencies telling him what parts of the films needed to be modified in order to be released in other countries.

It's definitely worth checking out. When we bought our ticket, it included a ticket into the main exhibit as well. So if anything- it's a cool day trip. Parking is a cinch and it's only being $7 in the underground structure. There are a ton of meters and vague signs in the area- so I would avoid that all together. $7 is a small price to avoid being towed.

Let me just start off by saying this....I'm NOT a museum type of person.  I don't understand art.  My art teacher in elementary school told me to just stick with music.  I have no talent when it comes to art.  Food art? Perhaps.  Picasso?  Monet?  They're cool.  A big frame with a huge Blue Square in the middle?  How's that art????

Came here for their Metropolitan Exhibit.  5 stars!  That was one cool show.   All the details and physics that went into creating this massive highway system surrounded by cultural buildings and such was pretty awesome!   They used hot wheel looking cars that spiraled around this block of what I think is DTLA in the future.

LACMA sure has changed a lot since I came here for a field trip back in the days.  I love how modern and chic they had transformed the whole outside area of the museum.  There are three or so different restaurants where you can sip a glass a wine and enjoy your food out in the patio area.

Dog friendly only in the outside courtyard and park area.  If it weren't for their $10 parking, I'd come here more often to grab lunch and hang out with my pooches.   The admission fee is very cheap.  $15.  I can understand why they have to charge so much for parking.  Good luck finding street parking!

Like I said, I don't know too much about art but it was a good experience to come here and browse the new LACMA!   Sorry I can't be so detailed regarding all the different artists and exhibits during my visit.  But all I can say is.....Great way to spend your weekend!

    An Angelino Must!

LACMA has a large collection of ecceltic art pieces, their most famous, in my opinion, being Picasso. There are multiple buildings with multiple floors. The comptemorary art building even has a giant red elevator. I was impressed enough by the elevator..

Right now, don't miss the Modern California exhibit which hosts retro cars, artwork, clothes, even shaggy rugs. The Metropolis II, which utilizes 1,100 hot wheels cars to represent LA's city scene is another 'must see'. I also enjoyed sitting outside, taking pictures of the Urban Light exhibit with my Instagram app, and listening to the live band.

LACMA is a mere $20 for adults, $10 for students. Great for dates, friendly outings, and even welcome to the little rug rats. The La Brea Tar Pits are right next to LACMA, and an enjoyable walk, just follow the fossil footprints!

Parking is expensive, but I warned this is a true Angelino experience.

I want to shout it from the rooftops, "I became an Active Member of LACMA for 2012"

If you're planning even a single trip to LACMA in 2012 you should consider becoming a member for your visit.

If you're buying two tickets for one day, you can expect to pay a total of $30.  If you become an active member for $90, you and a guest will have free enter for an entire year.  If this were not attractive enough, you can receive a 20% discount if you are either a member of AAA or KCRW.  We got our membership for $72.  For the month of January you can bring an additional two guests with you.  Therefore, Erin, I and two friends attended the Pacific Standard Time exhibit for a total of $72, whereas it would have been $60 for us to buy a one day ticket.

You can go online to see all the other benefits afforded to you as an active LACMA member.

You are strongly encouraged to attend the Pacific Standard Time (PST) exhibit on California Design while it is up in LACMA's Resnick Pavillion.  They have a replica of the house Charles & Ray Eames lived in that is furnished with the actual belongings of these two reveered designers.  We attended the free docent lead tour at 12 noon on Sunday which allowed us to appreciate the impact that modern design and the California lifestyle had on the American consciousness  in the 50's and 60's (and continues to have today).  What continues to be striking is the climate in Southern California supports an ambivalence about indoor and outdoor distinctions.

Love this museum! I've been here a few times and each time I feel as though I never have enough time to thoroughly go through each building. I also love that they rotate out their artwork frequently.

Came here for the Kubrick exhibit.
I have not been to any other exhibits or halls yet.

The Kubrick exhibit was setup great!  Tons of material and goodies to spy.  The layout was very thoughtful and the displays were well lit and there was plenty of walking/staring room.

    The staff/security was very pleasant.

Parking is $10 in their garage all day.  Take advantage and do some walking around while you're here.  Can't wait to go back and see more.

I've been a LACMA member for years.  A muse member at that.  I go about twice a month.

    Tips:
    Plenty of street parking.

Restaurant is not that expensive and makes great drinks.

The staff are all really great.  Everyone really seems to enjoy where they work.

    Be a member.

    Go to member events.

This is one of the very best places of all time in Los Angeles.  I think a membership is a great gift for a lot of people.  most people won't spend the money on a membership for themselves but are overjoyed by the gift.  One membership is good for 2 ppl.  Just Sayin.

I love this museum. It's one of the more interesting ones in Los Angeles in my opinion of course. To show you where my interest lies - I like Norton Simon Museum the best and then LACMA. I have no interest in MOCA and can get fairly bored at the Getty. So, if that sounds like you, you will more likely enjoy this museum as well!

I always try to find street parking. I know it can be a hassle and to pay that extra I think $10 can make your life easier, but I still try.

The place is quite large, so give yourself minimum of 2 hours to spend here.

A lot of great eateries nearby too so it's a half-day trip :)

Yup, I'm giving 4stars for Free Museum day. But hey, 4stars is great. 3 stars is pretty good too. It's not 5 only because the exhibits you are allowed to visit are always the same ones. The always seem to be showing the same thing, which isn't bad, but why limit the access on free days. It's just one day and it would make a big difference as far as attracting more unique visitors

I always wanted to take pictures here because I always see great pictures from the Street Lamp Landmark.

I thought it was a great place to take pictures and decided to go here for our engagement pictures. Make sure you try to go on a weekday so out won't be so crowded. Get your parking garage sub validated at Roy's and the parking is free. If not, It's $10 for parking.

We went on a Tuesday night and it was perfect to take pictures at the Street Lamp Landmark. Even the walk way to there was beautiful with all the bright red poles. We even took some pictures with those. Can't wait till my pictures are done being edited!
