The Getty Center is like Le Chateaux de Versailles and the Louvre all rolled together into one. It is not only an impressive art museum, but the architecture is breathtaking as well. Los Angeles weather is naturally comfortable during the winter, so we enjoyed the comfortable breeze and the stunning views while walking around here. Even though admission was free, I still have to gripe about the insanely expensive parking, AND having to reserve a parking space in advance??

This place was amazing especially the outdoor scenaries. Depending on the night, it had different things going on. I happened to be there during a 80s event and had the chance to learn some dance moves and truly just to enjoy the music (great company helps!). I just love walking around the museum and the restaurant next to it was super nice. We sat outside and the view was breath taking, you can see most of LA!
For just $15 for parking, it was well worth it! -

Listed in Museums and Cultural Fun!Love this museum, especially the architecture.
I don't come here enough.
I love that it's free (though parking is $!5)
I love that it hosts summer concerts and children's activities, movie screenings, and more.
The restaurant food is delectable, you woulndt even think you were eating museum cafeteria food since it's all very gourmet.
The art selection is great and ample. Their visiting exhibits are good. I was recently there for the CUBA photography exhibit and i was very much inspired by the show.
The fact that it's free to get in, makes the museum accessible to all people and i quite appreciate that.
They have a beautiful flower/herb/rose garden as well as a freshly cut lawn where you can lay out, eat a meal, read a book, listen to music, make-out with your significant other, and more. My favorite thing to do on this lawn is roll down it (cause it faces downhill)!!!!
I will always take visiting friends and family to this impressive grandiose place; but i also quite enjoy coming here alone on a mellow afternoon, or with a friend to enjoy the architecture, watch the sunset over the city views and share a drink and some hor'dourves at one of the fancy gourmet cafes.
Store is large with a great selection. Bathrooms are spacious and clean.
You do not need an appointment to come here (as you would need one for The Getty Villa in Malibu). Just show up and walk right in! -

I'm not an art gallery type of person, I always feel like I'll be told off for something, but this place is worth a visit for the grounds and the view alone. They have a fantastic viewing platform with a panorama that stretches from the ocean at Santa Monica to beyond Downtown. I enjoyed the exhibits too but at some of them you're not allowed to take photos although this is not made clear (they should put some signs up) so make sure to ask a staff member. Well worth visiting for the afternoon.

A friend took me here when I was in town, and it was the perfect way to spend the afternoon. Lots of good art, and the buildings and grounds themselves were just as worthy of attention.
The only possible negative I can think of is that if you're mobility-impaired, the whole experience might be a bit exhausting. There's a lot of going in and out of buildings, and while it seemed like they had plenty of ramps and elevators, it would have to be a little awkward, especially on a crowded day.
Other than that, I can't think of a single bad thing to say. If you're in LA and time allows, definitely stop by. -

Listed in Culture VulturesFREE ADMISSION! ($15 to park) - The most relaxing way to spend a day. Extensive in all facets of art, photography, architecture and gardens. The views of Downtown and the Santa Monica Mountains go for miles. Van Gogh's "IRISES" calls this place home permanently - be sure not to miss it.
Take a picnic lunch and a blanket, you will want to enjoy the sprawling lawn. Lots of wonderful fountains and even a small section devoted to a childrens museum, which is wonderfully hands - on for little ones.
The kids will love the tram ride up to the center, quite an experience my children love and it never gets old. -
4 - 4.5 Stars!
This is a great place to take your family, a date, friends from out of town, etc. Admission is free but you'll have to pay for parking (I think it was $15) and also pay $$ for food at the cafes if you didn't bring your own. Love the free areas, displays, exhibits, the relaxing grassy area (where you can actually just lay down a blanket and relax), the many restrooms, the cool views of LA and areas just to sit and admire the crowd, the art, the nice sunny warm Socal day. Thanks to Mr.Getty himself for the Getty Center.
Now minus the .5 even 1 star for the super strict ushers and staffers. They almost mirror the Holocaust museum in Washington DC (read my old review from them from last year) with their patrols, watchful eyes, scolding, and gestures. I completely understand that the art may be a gazillion years old or from Van Gogh from the 1800s, etc...but you don't have to be a jerk about it. I didn't get yelled at, but I saw some of the others being yelled at just for admiring a painting from 1890 too closely. I would say that you as a parent need to curb your uncontrollable children around these fine ancient works of art. But the ushers don't need to be mean about it.
Other than that...I love the Getty Center!- From da lawn...From da lawn...

This really was as good as it gets. Spectacular - we want to return as there was just so much it was overwhelming. How amazing it was that it was free admission.
We came in on a motorcycle so parking was free. The attendants there were really cool. But cars its $15 to park.
Lots of options to get something to eat there - we tried the Restaurant which was awesome. Such a welcoming place and easy to get around to wander. You just park, get on the tram and enjoy. Its like away from all the crazy. You could spend so much time just wandering around outside in the gardens and scuptures. Live music was playing so you could just sit and listen. They were very kind to offer umbrellas to shade you from the sun. Volunteers were all over to help and guide you.
Kid friendly as they had a family festival going on and there were several craft making activities just for the kids.
I would love to have just come here to sit with a picnic and book.
The exhibits were great to wander through as there were all varieties - Canterbury, photography, decorative arts, drawing. And it was interesting to hear so many languages as people were visiting from all over the world.
A great getaway. -

First I want to say I wish I could give The Getty Center a 5 star rating but I can't. More to come on that. If you're planning on visiting the Getty any time soon plan on heavy traffic near and at the Getty. The freeway has been under heavy construction for over 2 years now so watch it during rush hour time. Parking is $15 and you pay at machines located near the elevators.
The time between the tram line and on the way up was very minimal. It was a very busy Saturday and about 5 trams came and went before lucky #6 arrived and we ventured our way up the hill. This was about a 15-20 min ordeal. Not bad if you've ever been to Disneyland. One great tip is in the garden area there are large grass areas to picnic with friends and family. I would recommend this as to the prices at the cafe and restaurants aren't the cheapest. I'm sure the food is worth it but if you're trying to plan a nice inexpensive outing which ends up being more fun and personal then grab a sacked lunch with a blanket if you like, throw it in your backpack so you can lug it around the Getty when you're done. The garden was as beautiful as I remembered from last time. Millions of great photo spot opts here.
I won't talk about the art because it's been done millions of times just as I'm sure a lot of what I said has been written in previous reviews. The last thing I want write about is the tours that go on which are guided by docents. I checked out their FREE interactive iPod self guided tour. What you can do is see a painting, check the info card and if there's the "PLAY" icon at the bottom it means you can enter in a code on the iPod and it plays info about the art your are viewing. For the traveling exhibits this isn't the case. What you do is the iPod knows your relative location in the exhibit and displays options to view different video's that correlate to the room you are in. The problem is if you go during the time they have a free guided tour you better be both patient and ok being rubbed up against people who don't understand personal space, especially in situations where personal space is limited. I got stuck behind a tour group multiple times because they were all bunched together and blocking paths. I couldn't see most of the exhibits hanging on the wall because of the sheer amount of people in the room. I tried to get smart and jump ahead of them. Nope. They crept up quicker than the honey badger and we were bumping elbows again. They should probably try and space out people coming and going instead of herding everyone in like cattle. That's my only gripe really. Everything was great but for such a large establishment that has been there as long as it has they should know how to manage and maintain large groups of people.

BEST museum of I've ever been to because they make a point of sneakily educating patrons about art in all of their exhibits. You always walk out of the Getty having an "aha" moment about an artist, their work or the era in which they practiced. I don't think I've encountered this before at any museum. It's smart, it's cool, it elevates visitors.
For example, the recent Klimt exhibit focused on his drawings and use of lines. The pieces were arranged to show his progress in his craft. Just by virtue of walking through the 5-6 room exhibit one came to understand Klimt's radical departure from convention after being a straight-laced type of artist in his early years. I gained a whole new respect for the early avant garde that I hadn't had before because I realized that Klimt and his cohorts were punk rockers of their time. Images that I've seen thousands of times on billboards and greeting cards and frankly had grown tired of seeing, suddenly had meaning for me again.
This place and the people who run it are absolutely brilliant. -

This review is brought to you by one big Klimt fan. The recent exhibit at the Getty was my main reason for this last trip. I've also seen the DaVinci exhibit and many other glorious things here. Parking is only $15 and the rest of the experience is free. Bring some sunscreen (though there are umbrellas all around to keep you properly shaded. Pick one up, stroll around and deposit it elsewhere. Brilliant).
In every room there is a moderator making sure you don't touch the paintings or take pictures (unless it's a Getty owned image). These people can also be wealths of information about the grounds so don't be afraid to ask for some tips. I was led to a smaller balcony that was off the building, not super well known but a great view of the gardens from overhead. I was also aided in my quest for some Titian. Oh the beautiful Titian.
Got my fill of the gardens, Klimt and Titian and I was well on my way. CP purchased a beautiful print of Klimt's Fish Blood.
The Getty is a Los Angeles mainstay and a wonderful way to spend a day. You'll feel relaxed, inspired and fulfilled. -

Beautiful!
I cannot believe this place is free (you have to pay for parking, but it's still a steal!)! One of the best art museums I've ever visited.
I was visiting friends in LA last month and we decided to spent most of a day at the Getty Center. The four of us brought a picnic of bread, cheese, olives, and fruits and had a great time among other picnickers on the beautifully manicured lawns (no alcohol allowed).
Afterwards, we wandered around the exhibits and gardens. The Klimt exhibit was gorgeous! And the general open atmosphere of the center was a great change of pace from the city.
Highly recommended, whether you're a LA native or just visiting. Just make sure you give yourself enough time to enjoy and not rush through hectically.- small groups of picnickers on the lawnsmall groups of picnickers on the lawn

Listed in The Yelp 100 Challenge - 2013Wish I had more time to check this place out. Will definitely have to pay another visit to this place.
After you park [$15], you take a tram ride up to the Getty museum while overlooking the 405. This place is gigantic and beautiful.
The museum is mostly composed of American and European paintings from the middle ages to present day.
There is an amazing view of LA at the top. Extremely beautiful.
I didn't get a chance to truly enjoy the museum as I was a bit on a time crunch that day. Until next time! -
This place is beautiful! I wish I could just live here. It's been 10 years since I've been to the Getty Center and it's as gorgeous as I remembered it. Located up in the mountains, it's nice to get some fresh air outside of the crowded LA streets.
From the moment I parked, my experience at the Getty was all positive. Parking in the garage: plentiful. Waiting for the tram: painless. Walking around the exhibits: awesome. The view: SPECTACULAR.
If you've never been to the Getty before, I would highly recommend it. -
BREATHTAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL.. IS THAT EVEN A WORD?!
i came for college night so it was free entree & in all honesty i only went inside one exhibit because the view of the city & ocean & gardens just completely stole the show!!! there was NO NEED to go indoors let me tell you!!
take a date here, sip some coffee from their coffee bar, or grab some food from the cafe (use your AAA card for 10% discount.. unless you're trying to woo your date), you will no be disappointed

I've been to the Getty Center countless times. I love the collection. I love the architecture. I love the location. Where else can you partake in such a view of West Los Angeles? The Getty is home to an impressive collection of artwork. My most recent visit was to peruse the Herb Ritts LA Style exhibit. I like to catch the latest exhibition whenever I visit because I have already seen their permanent collection. Although it is nice to wander around the halls and gawk at the masterpieces. Parking is $15 per car (before 5pm) and admission is free.

The Getty Center is such a beautifully structured and designed museum. There's absolutely nothing you can find flawed in the architecture, exhibits or gardens. The first time I visited, I was in the third grade and definitely did not appreciate its elegance.
I finally visited again this past weekend and had an amazing time. I expected there to be an admission price, so the $15 parking fee was well more than worth it! Although I'm not the biggest arts and history type of person, I can still appreciate it! My favorite piece of art definitely has to BE Van Gogh's Irises :) My friend and I went through the galleries and exhibits fairly quickly though. What I enjoyed most was just the structural designs of the buildings and the beautiful layout of the gardens outside.
The only sad thing was that since we visited on a random Wednesday, the cafes were closed and I didn't get to look classy and sip on champagne and analyze art :( Regardless, for those from or visiting LA, this is a must-see place!!! -
My friend Steph C. recommended The Getty Center as the number one attraction for a day in LA. It lived up to the hype. We went on a Saturday afternoon in January, around 2PM. There were a lot of cars in-n-out going. The crowds were well managed. Post parking we took the tram to the complex. The buildings and grounds are integrated into the California land- there are extraordinary views. Inside the buildings fine things have been collected and are on display.

I love the Getty Center!
I used to come here every now and then for different projects, whether it was for my art history class or photography/yearbook class, or simply just to visit.
The museum is free, although you have to pay for parking.
The Getty Center showcases American and European art from the middle ages to the present. They feature many famous classics like Rembrandt, Rubens, Monet, etc as well as abstract and contemporary art.
Aside from the art, they have a beautiful garden, as well as awesome architecture! If you get tired of walking around inside or become overwhelmed by too much art, sit on the grassy hill outside and soak in the sun/view! It's a great place to bring kids too! I always see them playing in the grass. :) -

Wow, what a gorgeous place! I came here with my fiancé on Valentines day and I just had a wonderful experience. The line to take the tram up on Valentines day was longer than usual. It was a 15 minute wait. The restaurant there had an amazing view. The food was okay, but the ambiance definitely was worth it. The garden is just breathtaking and we laid on the grass for awhile after lunch. I definitely recommend this place as a romantic or even artistic way to spend your day.

Very fancy. Have you seen Elysium? I just watched it last week on my flight to LA so it was hard not to think of it while walking around the Getty campus--this pristine, verdant paradise of beauty and leisure perched high above the swarming world below, like the satellite nation in the movie. The nice thing about the Getty (unlike Elysium) is its openness to we plebes. It welcomes anyone who can pay $15 for parking, or take the bus.
The panoramic views of LA, from downtown to the Pacific, are spectacular, and the gardens a delight. A friend said he thought the gardens didn't have enough natural messiness for him. But I thought the sequences of contrastive geometries to the flower beds, and the spilling of certain plant species from one area to another, gave a sufficient sense of spontaneity in its perpetual struggle with harmony. Just like in the materials of the buildings of the campus--the alternation of synthetic, smooth beige cubes and the rough-hewn blocks of rock, also beige. Hmm.. now that I make this comparison I'm starting to wonder, are the gardens too overdetermined after all?
Strolling around the campus and enjoying the serenity is the highlight of a visit to the Getty. The art collections are not quite so spectacular. I did enjoy a temporary exhibit in the galleries of the Research Institute, featuring old books with maps of the world, and detailed drawings of ancient Greco-Roman structures in the Middle East, or etchings of Egyptian mummies by 18th century French explorers. The grand size of the books and the exploratory nature of their contents conveyed a sense of wonder at a planet that hadn't yet been entirely photographed and GPSed. But nothing wow'ed me that much in the galleries of the permanent collections. They are fine, but seeing as how this is a relatively young museum they just don't have the treasures of the Met or the Hermitage or what have you. However, seeing all the paintings of Italianate landscapes, the rolling hills, the rocky slopes, the villas standing in for Palestinian houses in Renaissance religious paintings and the fragments of Roman edificies dotting the landscapes of the Romantics, gave me a sense of how the Getty imagines itself with regards to the past, and even a speculative glimpse of its future... it'll make a beautiful ruin someday. -

Bring your family, friends, everyone. It's free and there's so much to see. I suggest you show up at the exact time it opens. You have to have one full day to tour the place. Bring your camera. They do allow photography in some parts of the museum. They have a posted sign no photography so you have to watch out for that otherwise the guard will call your attention. If you do take photos make sure you turn off the flash. You do have to pay for parking.

Went here twice.
Parking $15 bucks. but the museum is free . So It's worth it. I can't complain.
It was pretty crowded that that on Tuesday at 1PM. We got the parking on the very last floor and last spot! Only 7 spots left and after I parked, there were 4 cars lining up parking after me!
You can't find any parking spots on the street, it's just impossible, it's right across the 405 freeway and there's a big construction happening for years.
About the Getty, we love them, they seem like relocating the paintings, but my favorite were still there. I went here with my 3 peeps.
The security guys are pretty cool, but one of them was a jerk, I wish I caught his name. I was asking for direction and showed him the map, he was just pointing with his finger I couldn't even tell which one he's pointing at. I understood then went back to my peeps and more questions came up and went back asking to the security, I was so confused about the area. Out of blue, he went mad! He was like "I can't believe it, I told you like 3 times and you still don't get it!"
I was like.."What??! You didn't really show it, sorry but I don't work in here. And thank you for Not Helping!"
WTH..sorry that you work there and being bored but NOT sorry..
Oh whatever..
We had good time and I always love looking at paintings.
We checked out the paintings, sculptures, and photos, done in about 4-5 hours.
But if I went there alone, I would've spent time alot more than that.
They have pretty good amount of paintings.
They also have nice looking garden where people can have their own picnic time.
Keep in mind, it could be hot in the summer even you sit on the grass, it's not always on shade area though. -

Can't believe I haven't been here yet. Stunningly, beautiful architecture. The outside gardens and sculptures are a nice touch. There is also a great view of Los Angeles. I can only imagine how great the view is in the evening when the city lights are on.
The art collection was okay, but I'm not an art critic. Although, I did realize that I prefer paintings over drawings or watercolors. There weren't any big name artists other than Rembrandt; at least from what I saw. I'm sure people appreciate all the artwork, but I still prefer the art museums in the Netherlands.
If you're not into art, just come here for the architecture. That alone should entice you. If not then, remember it's FREE, well except for parking ($15). If you are frugal then rely on public transit. Nonetheless it's definitely a place to check out even if you are from LA. Every now and then we need to be tourists in our own cities!- SignSign

Free admission.
$15 dollars to park. Free parking after 5pm on Saturday's.
Taking the tram up is fun. Walking down the hill is even better.
Oh yeah and there is art here too. And sculptures. And a great photography collection. A stroll through the garden is a must. And don't forget to relax by the fountain near the West Pavilion and soak up the sun.
And if your hungry, there is something for everyone. Cafeteria style Cafe for a leisurely lunch, Grab & Go Cafe for those quick bites, Coffee Carts for a pick me up and a snack or a full service Fine Dining Restaurant when the hours of your days do not matter.
But you really come for the views.
Best sunsets in all of El Lay. People fall in love here they really do. I did. It didn't last but man was that a great sunset. -

A whole new world~ A dazzling place I never knew~ haha. But REALLY! The Getty is beautiful. You pay $15 for parking and ride on a tram that takes you up to the Getty. It's like going to Disneyland you guys, but better! Please make sure you check out the garden! I could literally just sit there for hours!! I'm not an art fanatic but I actually enjoyed myself with some of their exhibits. I'm not sure if their times have changed, but on weekdays they open only until 5pm and on Saturdays only they open until 9pm! Plus, if you arrive there after 5, you pay $10 for parking. Hope you guys visit the Getty soon (:

The architecture of this buliding alone makes it worth a visit. Its presentation is phenomenal...starting with your ride to the top of the hill. FREE ADMISSION always catches my eye, and $15 for parking is a steal considering the former.
I really enjoyed the current Mapplethorpe exhibit, and the impressionists... Who doesn't love Van Gogh's Irises in person?!
The afternoon light made for spectacular pictures in the garden, and the stairwells reflected the sun equally amazingly. It was definitely a Zen experience. -

Listed in Let's Do Something - LAThe fact that I was 17 when this museum opened, and I've only just now managed to pay it a visit, is embarrassing.
I cannot imagine a more LA place to spend a gorgeous day. It showcases all the incredible things about living here: the ocean, the expansive sprawl, the smog, the incredible wealth needed to create a place like this...all are on magnificent display at the Getty. We came for the Herb Ritts exhibit, on display until late August 2012, and were just in time for the re-opening of the newly-renovated Gardens.
On a regular basis, however, you can count on the following at the Getty:
- FREE admission (plan on spending $15 for parking though)
- Musical performance and film series during the summer. Also free.
- Guided tours on a regular schedule every day - taking you through the architecture, gardens, permanent collections and current exhibits.
All in all, this is one of the best ways to spend time on a beautiful day in Los Angeles. -

I took a trip to The Getty yesterday and I had a splendid time! I was delighted to see that is was super easy to park, not very crowded, and admission was completely free!! Part of the reason we came was to see the Queen Victoria exhibit, but in the end, other parts of the museum were what really caught my attention. I usually never take the tours because I like to browse by myself, but this time I took The Collection Highlights tour for an hour and it was amazing. We had a guide and they gave us an earpiece so that we could listen to the docent speaking on a microphone, which was a pretty cool feature and the hour just flew by. The docent explained she would be taking us to some of her favorite pieces that she had chosen for today and would spend about 15 minutes on each art piece she chose. We saw pieces like "Irises" by Vincent Van Gogh, "Virgin and Child With Saint Anne" by Leonardo Da Vinci, different tapestries and furniture, beds owned by famous kings and queens, and other beautiful paintings by famous artists, during the tour. After the tour, we went to the Queen Victoria exhibit. We were worried since we had only 20 minutes left, but that was all the time we ended up needing. The exhibit contained different photographs of her and her family, but to be honest it was nothing really special. The feature of the museum that stuck with me most were the breathtaking views; it's a beautiful way to spend the day. The Getty is a must for people visiting LA given that it's one of the city's greatest attractions. It is perfect for hanging out and doing work or seeing astounding artwork. The Getty Center itself is a masterpiece :)

If I live close to here, I definitely wouldn't mind coming here everyday. Getty is just that beautiful.
The good:
-FREE admission
-Easy to access, close to highway
-A very nice view of the 405 Hwy as well as Century City and LA downtown.
-The garden is "always changing, never twice the same."
-Beautiful architecture is everywhere means every spot is great for photography.
-Huge collection of arts and paintings
-Large underground parking garage
The bad:
-Parking is $15 per car or $10 per car after 5:00pm
Even with the expensive parking, I still wouldn't take off any stars. The Getty really is just that amazing so go check it out if you haven't. To avoid the parking fees, riding the Metro is recommended. -

I'm not going to write a through review for The Getty because all that needs to be said is that the place is amazing as it has state of the art facilities with the greatest art that you'll see on the west coast. I recommend going on saturdays because you can sit on the grass outside of the garden and eat your dinner and drink wine while you watch the sunset. Go to the Getty you'll love it.

Pretty romantic, I must say.
It's free. It has van gogh, Monet....and amazing architecture and gardens.
As you get off the freeway, you begin to see the beautiful buildings on the hill. And you realize, you need to somehow get there. Park on the ground level and then you take a tram to go up to the actual museum. The view of LA and the surrounding area as you go up is breath taking. On the way down, it was dark and we were able to see the traffic on the freeway- the ights were beautiful...and we were glad we weren't stuck in that traffic.
The architecture is simply beautiful. The fountains in the middle of the courtyard is a good place for everyone to sit and chat (kids play around) and the coffee the kiosk had was pretty good). We walked down to the garden area with a lot of cactuses(cacti? Haha) and were able ti see downtown LA, beverly hills, Hollywood, and Santa Monica. The view from the museum is just beautiful...and quite romantic. (props to my date for planning this).
We didn't get to go through everything, so I'd like to come back to go through other parts of the museum.- IrisesIrises

This was the most beautiful place to visit on a Saturday afternoon. The reason I am giving it three stars and not five is because it has absolutely awful parking right now that it really makes the experience difficult. Other than that it has a wonderful Monet and Van Goe Collection! Additionally, the gardens are some of the most romantic spots in all of Los Angeles and this place because the most perfect date place.

History
Established in 1997.
The Getty Center opened to the public on December 16, 1997. The mountaintop site overlooking the 405 freeway was chosen in 1982, and architect Richard Meier began work in 1984. Once construction began, the Center took nearly nine years to emerge from the hillside: 24 acres of buildings and gardens, with a million square feet of interior space and 300,000 travertine blocks imported from Italy.
Today the Center houses the Getty's collection of European art from the Middle Ages to the present as well as European and American photography. It's also home to one of the largest art libraries in the world, which houses a vast special collections ranging from Old Master prints to optical devices.
