What a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of LA. I'd heard that the Getty was a must visit so this past weekend, I grabbed the roomies and saddled on up to Brentwood and the 405. The entrance ramp off the 405 needs some work but The Getty Center parking itself was smooth and easy with plenty of space. The tram ride up the mountain is a fun way to kick off the day (save time at the end by taking the short and beautiful walk down the main road). We started with the orientation film and then walked around. The free art tours were stimulating and the views breathtaking. Our favorite part was the sketching room where you are given all the materials you need to create art from looking at art. The amount of services and quality of the building for having no admission costs is incredible. We ate lunch in the main cafe as well and the food was awesome. The gardens will also take your breath away. We spent close to 5 hours here and they were 5 hours well spent.

Once, many years ago, I had purchased a quill and a bottle of teal ink from the gift shop at the Getty. My friend and I sat outside on the pristine white stone with my new toy and it was suggested, I can no longer remember by whom, that we try the new set out. I opened the container of the smooth, dark liquid, and though it only took me a moment to fumble and drop it... it seemed to fall forever.

I saw my life flash before my eyes as the ink drained from the glass jar, marring both the flawless travertine... and my dreams. This was it. I was going to be thrown in jail for defacing private property, I was going to have my Getty license permanently revoked, I was going to have to PAY to have the stone replaced, and I was going to have to buy another damn bottle of ink. Also, my friend had decided she was too scared to return right away when she left for paper towels, leaving me to believe the Getty police had gotten her. Woe was me.

Once my friend finally made her way back to me and the mess, we sopped up what we could, and then spent the rest of the time "evading" security, whom I am now positive wanted nothing to do with us. As you may have guessed, my Getty license wasn't revoked, and any trace of the ink on the stone was gone before my next visit. It's still a fun story to tell though.

Anyhow, I love this museum. It's beautiful and the exhibits change often enough to make frequent visiting worth it, and the staff is always friendly. On my most recent visit in February, a security guard challenged me to pronounce a particularly long word next to a drawing after admitting he could not do it himself. I tried my hand. I may or may not have failed.

Also, oddly enough, they serve some pretty delicious chai here. I've had it both hot and cold, and I really enjoy it. Their little snack trolly in the middle of the court yard also happens to serve soup that seems to be vegetarian every time I'm there. That's pretty great, even if it has nothing to do with art. I suppose I could go on and on about the pieces on display here, but let's face it... I couldn't really do them justice. Suffice it to say that if you are in the LA area, this museum should be on your list of places to make it to.

    Another review I missed??!

I've been to Getty probably a dozen times since it's opening back in the late 90's. I love the place. It's my 'go to' for out of towners because it's free, it offers amazing views, and it's always a pleasant experience. I hear a lot of people say they usually skip over the getty because they don't have the best exhibits. I think coming to see the gardens and architecture alone, is enough to make the place worth it. Plus if you know of another museum that requires a tram ride up the side of a mountain just to get in the front door, I'd like to hear about it.

    Minuses:
-parking costs a TON! But hey the damn museum is free. And if you're hardcore you can take the bus.
    -school field trips
-they don't allow water bottles in the buildings, where is one supposed to put their fancy re-useable glass water bottle?

PS took my current boyfriend there when we met in LA first time, seems to have worked out!

"You still haven't been to the Getty yet?!" exclaimed several friends when I told them I was going this weekend. Apparently, it's the a MUST for anyone living in the area. Now that I've been there, I can understand why it's on everyone's bucket list for LA. The place is truly a gem. Thank you Mr. Getty for creating a FREE place everyone can enjoy!

When you first arrive, you drive into a parking structure ($15 per car), and then after parking, you take the elevator up to wait for the tram to take you up the the actual museum. However, if the line for the tram is very long or you want to get in some quick cardio, you can walk up instead. It's about a 15-20 minute walk on a moderately steep hill. We decided to walk to burn off some of our breakfast.

Upon making it to the entrance, there was a table outside with free cookies(!!) to celebrate 20 million visitors. Boy, did we come on the right weekend! :)

There is a FREE coat/bag check in here. Major plus! We brought along a picnic lunch and were so glad we didn't have to haul our tote around while checking out the exhibits.

The exhibits themselves were fantastic. Now, I'm not an art aficionado, but I'm down with pointing at paintings/sculptures that I like (Sorry pre-1500s...I feel nothing for your art). So if someone as ignorant about art as me can enjoy the exhibits, you can, too! My favorite exhibit was Overdrive. Check it out!

Outside the museum, there are lots of grassy areas where you can sit and enjoy a nap or a meal. We brought a picnic blanket, some snacks, and had ourselves a little feast.

Be sure to check out the Central Garden. Lots of pretty flowers. :)

Hands down my absolute favorite place in all of Los Angeles. Heck, maybe the country.

Starting even with the entrance into the parking lot, taking the elevator up to the tram, staring out the window of the tram as you get higher and higher above the 405, cars getting smaller and smaller and the view more beautiful. When you step out, you are almost blinded by the bright and breathtaking architecture, the statues, the view of Los Angeles from so high up.

Honestly so much to do once you're inside. The art inside the museum (so much variety, so much to look at, and the displays gorgeous), the architecture of the buildings, with the sun shining off of the white and brick, the garden the GARDEN, and fountains, the sculptures, the grassy hilly area....oh my goodness. And I love grabbing lunch in the cafe or cafeteria before venturing into the museum or taking a walk along the garden, or sitting by the fountain taking pictures.

    I LOVE THIS PLACE.

Great to take pictures, wonderful place to take visitors, a great place to catch up with friends, or just letting your mind wander in this beautiful gem of a spot. It seems like its always breathtakingly beautiful weather when i go. the light blue sky against the bright buildings, the statues, and the green of the garden will amaze you! Oh wait, I take that back, I've also been when it was sprinkling a little. but it was still beautiful.

And I love love love gift shops inside museums. I can't help but try to look for the postcard of the painting that I discovered inside the museum that day, or just browse through their selection of books and mugs. love it!

One of my favorite places in LA. Why? Huge museum with a diversity of art and just overall beautiful place to visit. The museum is free to get into but if you're driving, it's $15 for parking (which is totally worth it). You have to take the tram up the hills in order to get to the actual museum which is located really high up the mountain. I'm not quite sure but I believe it's possible for you to walk, but why would you want to? Once you get there though, every corner is worth a picture. Richard Meier did a fantastic job with the architecture! It really is a beautiful place and very functional the way it's built. There's a garden below with a giant maze-like bush above the fountain. You can even walk down and look at the other plants/flowers in the garden up close. Next to the garden is a field of neatly trimmed grass where you can have a picnic, lie down to rest, or just enjoy the view. There are small foo vendors, a cafe and a restaurant. Food is ok and overpriced like food from any other museum. When I bring friends here I always have them check out the furniture galleries. I can never get over the wallpaper.

I was taken here by a friend who said I would go.  I'm not really the artsy type but I have to say, I loved it here.  The price is right--only cost me $15 to park.  Free admission!  Free audio tours. We got there right as it opened and it was great having the place to yourself for awhile.  The employees I talked to were all super nice and helpful.  How many times must they be asked, "Where is the restroom?".

The best part of the museum is plenty of seats!  When you get tired, you can just sit on the comfortable benches and recharge while enjoying the art.  The artwork was great.  I really learned a lot.  We did the gardens last and by that time it was really busy and hot.  I would do the gardens first (if you like that kind of thing) and go inside to the galleries when it warmed up in the day.

    Great place, totally recommend.

The Getty Center is beautiful!  I've been wanting to spend some time here for a while now and I finally made it a priority on my birthday.  Despite the fact that it was Easter Sunday, there were still a lot of people visiting.  The museum entrance itself and the tram ride to the center are free, it's just $15 for the parking.  The museum is massive so make sure to grab a map.  There are also certain works of art where photography is forbidden so be on the look out for the signs, or ask any one of the workers babysitting each room.  The garden is absolutely beautiful so allot some time to take some of that beauty in.  All in all, it was a wonderful birthday at the Getty.

One of the best museums I've been to.

There is no admission charge! You only pay the price to park your vehicle in the lot ($15). My girlfriend brought me here while I was visiting the city and I really really enjoyed the experience. The entire campus (yes, it is a large enough museum to require the word campus) is beautiful and well kept. Every pathway leads to an extraordinary view and that doesn't even touch on the exhibits. I was lucky enough to see a small print exhibit, a Klimt exhibit, and the "LA Style" exhibit. All were great, though it would take multiple days to get through this entire place.

    Must see for LA visitors!

The getty center is really big and there are a lot of different arts to see with different time periods and different cultural arts! The best part is that the museum is free!
However, you must pay for parking which was $15. I suggest coming on a sunny warm day to sit outside in the garden and take beautiful pictures! You can also pack some lunch and have a picnic in the grass area~

Beautiful architecture and views - a "must see" when you're in Los Angeles.  No need to plan an entire day to visit but don't forget your camera. We spotted a humming bird feasting on the flowers in the artistic gardens. Speaking of feasting, thew are a couple of different dining options. The cafe offers fresh salads, build your own sandwiches,  soups and a grill. We opted to grab a snack and sit on the patio. Free to visit but $15 to park.

Incredible place to view LA. The museum is HUGE. There are, what, like 6 separate buildings to explore! The outdoor sculptures and garden is beautiful. I especially admire the SOFT GRASS. If only they were open 24hours, I would sleep there and get up when it's really dark and just look at the skyline of LA.

The parking is $15 and it's for an underground parking structure. There really is no other way to get around that because street parking is non existent around the area. It's free admission, so bring a couple of friends, and it turns out to be a really inexpensive center. There are many indoor exhibits that do not allow photography, so please look out for those signs on the walls. I wanted to take a photo of the no photography sign for the pure irony of the shot, but there are security personnel EVERYWHERE. I'm saying EVERYWHERE. In every single room, there is a security guy or lady just standing there. One guy even farted when I walked past him. I was like..waaahhh.

But I really enjoyed this place. There is plenty to see and plenty to do!

WHY DOES THE GETTY EVEN NEED FIVE MORE STARS?  It must have the highest GPA already!

Sometimes I enjoy the fountains and the garden and the view of the Channel Islands more than what's on display indoors.

    Overall, I looooovvveee the Getty!

And guess what?  I take the bus which lets you off right at the bottom of the hill and take the tram up to the museum so i don't even think about paying to park.

BECAUSE THIS IS THE ONLY MUSEUM IN LOS ANGELES THAT IS FREE TO THE PUBLIC WHENEVER IT IS OPEN (exception being the Getty Malibu which is also free but for which you must have free tickets first) AND IT'S OPEN SIX DAYS A WEEK, YOU CAN BE IMPULSIVE AND GO ON A DROP-IN BASIS, ON THAT BASIS ALONE IT GETS FIVE STARS!  You can just be in the mood and go and whatever they have going, there is bound to be somethiing interesting or beautiful or fun.

I highly recommend the Getty whenever I encounter a tourist to our city or have an out of town guest.

I SHOP THE MUSEUM SHOP.  I love the tote bags they make out of the banners you see strung along some streets announcing various shows.  They are ecologically correct and they are really tough bags.

You get in for free, so why not buy a little something?

Some amazing high quality and expensive artisan jewelry at this shop too!

The on-site eateries are pricey - typical of museums - but its OK to bring your lunch and eat outdoors - and you can check things you don't want to carry around with you for free as well.

The Coffee at the cafeteria is my favorite coffee in LA!  I heard its their own blend so don't tell me if its actually from Smart and Final!

One of the best locations in L.A to have a picnic(in the garden). The center has art work worth in millions. The best part of all is everything is free except parking which is $10 after 5 P.M on weekend else its $15. The view at night or during day is nothing short of awesomeness. My daughter loves the little shuttle train that takes you up the hill. As you go up you can see the 405 freeway down below with the cars racing by. The restrooms are very clean and there are many benches and chairs to sit if you get tired.

I visit the Getty every few months as they rotate new exhibitions.  There is something for everyone, with the outdoor exhibits, and views of Los Angeles, given this facility's hillside siting.  Upon arriving via tram, you see the flowing white lines of the entry.  Several sculptures, including Charles Ray's Boy with Frog greet you at the terraced steps to the museum entrance.  There is a succulent garden situated to the south, overlooking the cityscape.  Do walk the gardens and enjoy the fountains and other sculptures.  Tip: I like visiting on Sunday mornings, before the afternoon crowds arrive.

Even if you don't like art, the view at the Getty makes it worth visiting. The views from Brentwood of the rest of LA are worth the price of admission. Oh yeah, admission is FREE!

Well, you have to pay for parking which is $15. But even so it still is worth it. The Getty is a massive venue. Once you park on one of the 7 levels, you take a tram to get up to the museum.

There are four wings of the museum that are divided into time period. Each have two floors with a diverse collection of paintings, sculptures, photography, even furniture. They have a couple areas of rotating exhibits.

In addition, they have many viewing areas outside to take great pictures of LA. Plus there is a really nice garden with a great array of flowers and a large fountain in the center of it.

I like the Getty because of the venue itself and there is a lot of recognizable art from artists like Monet and Van Gogh as well as some interesting pieces that I have not seen before, but that caught my eye. Though some of the art descriptions did seem odd. When it includes -ish, that seems less than professional. Also, the art could be a little more diverse. Seems mostly of European art.

The Getty is worth a visit in LA. If not for the art, the view.

The getty museum was most certainly the highlight of my LA trip. We went at 5 pm n stayed till the last minute. They close at 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Plus it is $5 less for parking on these days. Their art collection is so vast and amazing that some gave me goosebumps. The jaw dropping kind. I didn't use much of the audio tour but their explanations by the side are sufficient if you are just browsing through. I think I would have comfortably taken around 5 hours. But I only had 3 or so in the museum itself and so rushed a little. At night the view is spectacular. The weather was pleasant. I am a bit into literature. Quite a few of the paintings draw inspiration from that and it was pretty cool.

Seriously, what can I say about The Getty that hasn't already been said?

It's a must see. If you haven't been you should, and if you have, you should go again.

Fabulous place.. everything is so easy...the parking, the tram, etc.  It's also a beautiful way to spend an afternoon -- even if you aren't into art, the views and the lovely inner courtyard and gardens are worth the trip alone.

We visited the Los Angeles area every winter and we finally made it to visit the Getty Center.

Our friend highly recommended the architecture tour and it starts at 10:15am. We are glad to arrive early to take the tram up to the center before the center gets crowded.

The architecture tour was a great way to learn of the history and understand the color scheme of the center. After the tour, we are able to better appreciate the various buildings and pay closer attention to some of the details with the use of the square.

Another tour was the collection highlight. Our 13 y.o. son is a painter. It's a great way to navigate the gallery without getting too overwhelmed with its vast collection.

This visit is definitely the highlight of our trip to S. California. Highly recommend going on these tours. Bravo to the Getty family!

I am loving it here. The grounds are amazing!!! Beautiful city views and the garden is lovely. I literally sat in the garden and wrote in my journal. The exhibits are always changing so you can see what will be here on the website.

The museum does not have a fee but it is 15 dollars to park. Then you take the nifty little tram to the museum grounds. The courtyard has a shank bar and there are some restaurants up there but you can also bring your own lunch. Plenty of people had picnic baskets and blankets and eat on the garden lawn. The auto-tour is also free here and I have near been to a museum where that is free.

Great place to visit a must for those who love culture! ;-) Loved, would recommend, and will be back!

Hmmm... I hadn't been to the Getty in years...so when my boyfriend suggested we trek up there on Sunday... it seemed like a great idea...and it was.

So, as everyone apparently knows... the positive of this place is that the museum itself is free. You have to pay $15 for parking... but that's really not too bad... especially since you can bring multiple people in your car. :) It was really crowded however... since it was a Sunday afternoon I guess...oh and a holiday weekend? I don't know. What were we doing? Pretending we were tourists from Utah?!. Weirdos.

Anyway, the tram ride is awesome. Sitting down... it's great to see the view of the 405 and just view of Los Angeles. Standing up... it's rocky... hahaha... I'm notoriously clumsy... but it was more bumpy than you realize sitting down.

First of all, all the travertine is gorgeous. :)

All the artwork is pretty amazing. There were a couple Rembrandt paintings on loan from different places... so those were interesting. Tons of artwork. I'm not crazy about all the religious artwork...and there is tons of that stuff here. I guess it's cool because it's so old.. but the subject matter is so boring to me. I much prefer some of the impressionists stuff... upstairs... more along the 1700s/1800s era.  Definitely loved the furniture. Mostly Rococco stuff... but it's all pretty amazing. Probably one of my favorite aspects of this museum.

I'm a photography girl... but the "photography" stuff was a little lame. They were some "snapshots" from the 1930s... so we were guessing they were on display since they were probably one of the first snapshots and were really old. All I can hear in my mind is my boyfriend going: "If I found these in my closet, these would be in the trash." hahahahaha. It was pretty funny...and hearing him saying this in my head makes me laugh. It's true though...this wasn't true photography and I wasn't loving it...which is sad, because I usually love photography.

They had a special exhibit on Valentine and his resin. I loved this! I know it must have seemed really bizarre. It's just this huge resin pyramid... but I have so much... hmmm.. respect? for craftsmanship.... or maybe I can just relate to it more... but I really liked the resin... it was amazing.

The views outside are amazing. You can see for miles around... on one side the ocean... to the other side downtown... I don't know. It's just a very lovely view! :)

Only downside: The garden was closed. :( Sad! I love gardens and I was looking forward to a romantic stroll with him and I had never been to the garden before.

What's not to like about the Getty Center?  It is a wonderful place with a huge collection of art and other treasures.  It makes the local museums in San Francisco look miniscule. Some of the Center art is hung way above eye level and the glare inside makes it hard to see.  The museums are well maintained and the oak flooring is kept polished. There is a $15 parking fee, but entrance to the Center is free.  There is a tram at the base of the hill that takes you up to the Center.  It has well manicured gardens and lawns and is an ideal place for picnics and children.  The Center is modern and has several exhibit locations, all within close walking distance.  There are plenty of clean restrooms and eating facilities nearby.  One could spend all day here and not see all the wonders that this place offers.

The Getty Center came about through the generosity of J. Paul Getty, the oil billionaire.  I wonder how many anti-establishment and anti-fossil fuel people have enjoyed the benefits of this location, knowing it was financed through oil?  Maybe they don't care or are simply hypocrites or activists of convenience?

    Enjoy your visit!

This is my second time to The Getty.  I've enjoyed it both times and the weather was perfect as well.

There's always something new at the Getty.  We had a chance to see the traveling photo exhibit.

We also went on the Architecture Tour.  One My children had gone on the tour previously and it was entirely different.  Our docent was very knowledgeable and I enjoyed the tour thoroughly.

I especially liked walking through the gardens and seeing the vistas.  Of course, the Irises by Van Gogh is a highlight.  One set of paintings called the Not Guilty Verdict was very intriguing.  Never noticed it before.

It has been a while since I've been to the Getty. I remember when parking was $8. Unfortunately, it is now $15.  Even for $15 (since they can't charge admission), it's still an excellent value.

We arrived around 11am on Saturday and it was already packed.  I took my out of town guests there and they loved gardens and architecture. You can also get a fabulous view of the city.  We checked out the Herb Ritts exhibit and for a photography lover like me, it was fabulous.

I really wish there were less people. I think the Getty Villa offers a more tranquil experience but the Getty Center is a more impressive "tourist attraction."

As far as the art goes, it's alright but it's not comparable to the quality of European museums or even East Coast art collections but most people seem to visit for the ambiance rather than the art anyway.

Came here with my husband and 4 yr old daughter over the Christmas holiday break. Arrived around noon, and the place was packed. The wait for the tram 30+ minutes, wait at cafe 30+ minutes. Despite the lines, the museum didn't feel overcrowded. The grounds are extensive so that you rarely feel people breathing down on you. There are plenty of places to sit and eat. I would bring my own lunch next time though, since eating out was a bit expensive. We didn't bring a stroller for our daughter but noticed that the museum rents them out, if a need arises. Enjoyed the gardens, views, exhibits, and sunset. Definitely bringing friends when they visit from NYC. We'll try to visit in a weekday to avoid the long lines.

" Turn off your Flash"  Because the flash potentially  fades the delicate art pieces on display... Paintings are well kept in dark gallery.

Since my cousin was in town, I had the opportunity of showing him around LA and Getty's was one of our stop.  I was amazed at the architecture, landscape, and the beautiful view over looking LA  (santa monica,  thru downtown to the westside).

We walked each Hall and observe the paintings, sculptures of Greek goddesses,  the French styles, etc. Wish we had more time, but Happy Hours were calling us.

This place is amazing! What a wonderful place to spend a few hours on a nice day.

I came here this past Sunday for the first time. Admission is free, but it costs $15 to park. Tram ride up to the Getty is smooth and the view is amazing -- but, it may be too much for people afraid of heights to look out one side of the tram.

The Getty itself is beautiful. From the architecture, to the paintings, to the views -- everything is spectacular. They change the exhibits frequently, so you can go yearly and be able to see new sights, at least on the inside.

I really like the gardens, the views and the modern painting were quite interesting. Be forewarned that if you get too close to the art, the security guards will get all up on you. I got too close to one of the pieces, and within seconds I was asked to step back. Whoops! Live and learn.

If you need a snack or a drink, they do have food carts outside. They have everything from popcorn, to healthy snacks like apples, water, soda, coffee and even beer! Go outside, get a snack or a drink and enjoy the gardens and the view!!

Overall, this place is fun for an outing, a day trip, a date, girls day out, etc. Plus, it's close enough to Santa Monica that you can head down there for dinner after checking this place out!

    Happy Museum Going!

I LOVE this place - LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

Admission is FREE. Parking is $15. The last time I went I was with two other people, so it's as if we paid $5 to get in. So worth it.

Atmosphere: Tram takes you to the site. The place is huge. There is so much to see and do. From almost every corner of a building at the top, you can see a beautiful view of Los Angeles (unless it's cloudy, obviously). The art is spectacular, and the garden is breathtaking.

It does get crowded on the weekends, but I've never been during a time where it was unbearable.

This is one of my favorite places to go with friends and family when we want to have a relaxing, fun-filled day in Los Angeles. I highly recommend it.
